I looked at a filtration test/comparison between like 5 or 6 companies' air filters, K&N included, conducted on an R34, and while all averaged 4-5 hp, the levels of filtration varied greatly with HKS being the worst and K&N being second best. K&N only lost to a paper filter though, but HKS was rated as very poor for filtration. This was the usual drop in filter too, made of the same material. This made my decision a lot easier.

Its good practice not to open up a brand new filter and install immediately. You should let it sit out overnight (at least one night) to dry out a bit. If k&n heavily oils their filters then maybe let it sit out for 6 months?? LOL.

I've got a set of K&N drop in filters, but I don't want to waste my stock filters just yet. I'm at 7000 miles, when is a good time to replace the stock filters with the K&N filters?

I kept mine. I put them back in whenever I go to Nissan for any service. I just don't want to give them any excuses.

I just checked the Maintenance Guide and our engine air filters are good for 30,000 miles. Nice. I guess I will replace it now and just keep the stock filters for any future use.

Just read this entire thread and ordered mine. Lots of great information here.
I had a $75 gift certificate to Amazon.com and couldn't think of a better way to spend it. Cost me a total of $13.88. Looking forward to getting them on the car. |

Keep the stock filters for when you clean the K&N's. When you clean the K&N's, you spray cleaner all over them and then flush them out with water. Then you have to let them dry before re-oiling them. While you're waiting for them to dry out, put the stock filters back in so your car isn't grounded while waiting.

I have used K&N Filters for over 20 years. I have yet to have a problem with the oiling issue. I make sure I follow the directions when reoiling the filters. In every car I've installed the drop in filter I've notice a slight improvement. In all cars I notice gas mileage improvement as well. Well worth the $50 or so per filter.
Add a free flowing exhaust and you she'll give you a little more power. I have custom exhaust with 12" resonators and K&N drop in filters. Sounds wicked. Easy return to factory stock if I ever need to. Four bolts for the exhaust and a couple clips for the filters. Cheap fun mods is what I want for this car. Now, my other cars are money pits. Money is no object in getting more power for those cars. It's like a huge hole in my pocket. Where did that money go? Oh... :-0 that's right... I forgot about that part. My wife says it's always like Christmas around our house for me. I'm always getting presents delivered. He, he, he.... ;-) |
