Exhaust question?

Exhaust systems here cost a lot of money. I was wondering what you guys think of the akropovic set up. I can get a good deal on this company. Thing is there is the evolution line (CBE + TP) and the slip-on (just CBE) and the difference in price for me is 1300$.

1. What are your opinions on akropovic exhaust systems?

2. Does anyone know if these set-ups are resonated or not?

3. Do either of them need a tune (extra expense)?

4. What is the sound difference between just CBE and CBE + TP? What is the power difference between them. Is it worth it to get the full system. (lots more dough)

5. If I plan on headers in the future do I need TP's?

1. Originally I was eyeballing the Akropovic system myself. It looks really good, and I knew it was coming from a reputable company. The cost is really high, but so is HKS, another brand a few people around here have. The biggest thing about the Akropovic that kills their cost is having to ship overseas... Most vendors stateside get people by saying the cost is including shipping. Which is a win for us...

The best feature of their exhaust in my opinion, is the option of the Carbon Fiber tips. They look GREAT! I've seen/heard it in person, and those tips are very :yum:

2. Based on images of the Evolution (full cbe), they do have what appears to be 12" resonators in the mid pipes. An H pipe section as well vs FI's X pipe design. The slip on muffler section will use your stock midpipes/resonators.

3. If you're only putting on the cbe, a tune is not necessary. If you plan on doing other breathing mods (HFC's/TP's, Intake, Pulleys, etc.) then a tune would be warranted.

4. The CBE paired with stock cats will still sound very quiet at idle and cruising, and will have a better sound when you give it gas. I have heard the full system with TP's and I must say it does sound Very aggressive, but there is a lot of rasp in it. If you were to get Resonated test pipes, this might combat that and just give you a very exotic sounding exhaust. And FI does make Res TP's. It would be worth it to get the full system because you'll see the most gain from it. If you just get the slip on axel-back, you won't see a good hp gain/$$ balance. It would be purely for a slightly different sound and looks.

5. If you plan to get headers in the future, there are two varieties. The Shorty header (Stillen, Nismo) will need to be paired with Stock cats, HFC's, or TP's. Long Tube Headers, (FI, PPE) will Not need cats or TP's as they will run the full length and bolt directly to the mid/X-pipe.

Thanks I didn't quite get number 5. If I get the slip on now and I plan on getting the long tube headers in the future I don't need tp's now? Number four you say that the full system sounds raspy because there are no resonators in the tp's but previously you state you do see resonators in the picture in the mid pipes

Bear in mind he's in Israel, check the 350z-uk.com forums for more info on the Akropovic systems, they're on a lot of bikes there too.

He's referring to resonated test pipes, getting just test pipes themselves, will give any system a lot of rasp on these cars :(
For example, Motordyne's ART pipes (resonated test pipes) almost completely remove rasp and also add back the lost low down power normally associated with test pipes.
I also know that FI make some resonated test pipes as well.

Test pipes generally will give you more power and volume through the range.

Perhaps get the CBE first and see if you want to upgrade with other parts later on, no need to get it all in one go.

Akrapovic makes a GREAT product. We sell quite a few Akrapovic exhausts, although most Akrapovic buyers own European cars or GTRs.

We can also ship anywhere in the world. If any of you guys are interested in the Akrapovic exhaust for your Z, let me know!

Well, I was talking to my dealer and he also offered me the option of a Remus CBE which he installed on another Z. He said the sound was amazing. I'll give you the details: akropovic full system $4,500, akropovic CBE $3,200, and the Remus CBE $1500. These are the prices in my country. The Remus is much cheaper but doesn't have Remus TP's for future mods. Three questions; 1) How do you rate Remus exhaust set-ups? 2) Does anyone know if there are TP's that would be compatible for it? 3) Is it worth it to pay twice as much for the Akropvic CBE? I mean what are the differences the two companies? SS is SS. Thanks

edub370 06-14-2012 08:49 AM

TBH i haven't ever seen anyone running a remus system on a 370z on here. my dad ahs one on his 996 and it sounds very good.

speedfreek 06-14-2012 08:55 AM

Never heard of anyone running Remus on the Z either. I personally wouldnt fork over that kind of money for the Akrapovic system. Unless it made ungodly power compared to the rest or all the other systems sounded like trash and it was like music to my ears. Since neither of those are the case I would not buy the Akrapovic system just to say I have the Akrapovic system.

falconfixer 06-14-2012 10:04 AM

I had a full evolution Akropovic on my 2004 GSXR 1000 and it helped me put down 159hp to the wheel (this was in 05). Loved the exhaust hated the $1400 price tag back then. Don't know if the price is worth it for the Z tho.

edub370 06-14-2012 10:09 AM

Ya akrapovic is the last word in motorcycle exhausts. while they are AMAZING quality, they are just too damn expensive and IMO (from the youtube vids ive heard) doesnt sound all that impressive

Remus make a great exhaust as well. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone using their products on a Z though.

Shamrock 06-14-2012 12:24 PM

So does anyone know if there are TP's for the Remus? What could the technical/mechanical differences between both CBE's besides sound which exists between any two companies. Both are SS. Both are easily attached. Aren't they just metal pieces?

370Z Purist 06-14-2012 01:34 PM

If the exhausts are CBE, they bolt to stock cat positions. You can get a TP from any company which makes them for the 370Z, and they should fit properly if they are reputable.

You will have to find power numbers for the Akrapovic CBE (which on their website, I believe netted 11 additional horse and 8 torques?). The Remus product, I have found nothing on. There are likely small differences in the cans which may produce different sound. Otherwise, I believe the Akrapovic is a true dual.

I would suggest doing more research before asking; not to be rude, but because in general, TPs are universal fit for any exhaust (all within those made for the 370z) and is a generally known fact.

You will also have to consider what you want in the exhaust, more performance, more sound, perhaps weight savings, etc. or a combination of factors. Since both systems are apparently stainless steel, you will see a marginal improvement in weight, a loss of maybe 10-20 pounds. A titanium system, would of course, save tons of weight given tons of money.
