Default Takeda "Attack" Intake System (Long Tube Version) - Mini Review

Disclaimer: Before you even read any of this: no, I did not do pre and post dyno videos. Both Stillen and Takeda have published dyno charts to show their performance capabilities. YMMV.

Folks,

I happened across the newest intake from Takeda: the Attack Intakes, Long Tube version. They're pretty new to the market (they had some short ram intakes a while ago), and there's only one other thread so far, so I thought I'd put my initial thoughts up on it. I'll update as necessary as I get more seat time.

Marketing Description (from Takeda's site):
Quote:
This Takeda performance air intake system uses a unique dual flange filter design engineered to maximize surface area and flow. In recent testing this Takeda "Attack" cold air intake produced 15 horsepower and 16 lbs. x ft. torque, while outflowing the factory intake by 35%. The placement of the unique single air filter specifically designed to fit flawlessly in the area in front of the radiator guarantees a supply of cool, high pressure fresh air for maximum power gains. The Takeda philosophy of "no cutting or drilling" is maintained with this intake system, as flexible high resistance silicone couplings are used to pass through existing openings in the radiator core support. Whether for street or race, this is the ultimate intake system for the 370Z.
The Product:
Takeda's newest foray into the 370Z intake market is a long tube system, and at first glance it looks like one of the most popular systems on the market, the Stillen Gen 3. They do look remarkably similar, I'll give you that. However, instead of dual, disconnected tubes, the Takeda uses a single air filter that flows into both intake tubes. If anything, I'm curious if the surface area on the single filter is more than the Stillen; it looks like it. The filter is also nice because it's aFe's non-oiled filter, which means it will be super easy to take care of when you need to clean it. (Note: I do have aFe drop in filters too, and I love those things. I'm basing my happiness on the filter on personal experience on the stock boxes).

There's one 'flex coupling' that connects the front and rear metal tubes together, and it's made of silicone, not unlike the silicone tubes everybody likes behind the stock boxes. All in all, makes for a pretty workable product that can be adjusted a good amount to fit during installation.

The Installation:
Okay, I will be honest here, I did not do the installation myself. The installation was done at Amplified Motorsports, but I did talk to the technician a few times, who mentioned the installation was pretty straightforward (he got mad over my PW:JDM radiator cover that blocked access, but he still got it installed easy lol).

The definite plus over the Stillen for me is NO CUTTING OR DRILLING. Poor Rin's suffered enough from all the modding and deconstructing I've done to her engine bay, so this was a painless modification to do.

Everything looked like it cleared okay, and we put the bumper back on without issues, so I'm going to go out on a limb (*knock on wood*) and say the installation is fine, no issues.

The Sound:
er...right, this is about an intake, not an exhaust. Coming from my stock boxes, you can hear the intakes sucking in air a lot more, which means it's working! I guess it's a good 'performance' noise though, if you're looking for that sort of thing in your intakes though...

The Performance:
I drove the car pretty hard to Amplified when I could (I did get a little heat soaked in traffic here and there), and I tried to just do a seat test after installation on my way home. The car certainly feels like there's a bit more power across the board, even at low RPMs. It's interesting, since I remember seeing dyno charts saying Stillen gets most of it in the top end of the RPM band. I'd be interested in seeing more dyno charts with the Takedas to confirm what I'm thinking, but Rin is a little more responsive now. At least, in comparison to drop in filters and stock hardware.

Based strictly on literature though, you're barely going to notice a performance difference between this and the Gen 3s. They're so close. I mean, they are VERY similar designs, after all.

Side Note: I'm HyperTech'd against a stock intake tune still, and I'm driving around just because I wanted to eliminate that variable. The next thing I'm doing to try is to re-HyperTech with the intake map they have for the Stillen/Takeda design intake. Let's see how Rin responds then.

The Obligatory "Where's My Dyno Sheets" Section:
I don't have any. Here's a link to dyno charts from Takeda, though. They even have an air flow comparison on their site.

and for fun, Stillen.

The Pictures:

The Verdict (for now):
Pretty happy with the intakes right now. It's nice to see some alternatives come out for the Z to give the Stillen a good run for its money. It's more attractive to me than any other option because you don't have to futz with any other part of the car to get these installed. No cutting, no drilling, no chance of getting it wrong, in my opinion. I do reserve the right to change my review at any time after posting, but:

I'd recommend these to anybody on the market right now.

Thanks to Lou@Amplified and the rest of the AMP team as well for the help and install!

Nope to rattles / vibrations everything is nice and snug. All I hear new is the whoosh of air.

No issues with piping and the AC lines. I'll see if I can snag a few photos somehow.

After hours of researching and going back and forth between a short ram system or an alternative option of slicone intake hose and filter, I finally decided on this system. I was very skeptical with having to remove the bumper for install and maintenance but chose it do to dyno numbers and no cutting or alterations needed. Ordered today from autoanything.com should ship out by the end of next week. I plan on dyno tuning with this system and Agency power CBE. I'll post #s once everything is done.

Do separate dynos. Doing a dyno with both intake and CBE together won't be a good indicator of what these intakes can do.
