Ha! Long tube headers would be a nice way to avoid the problem entirely.

Best way to check for leaks is jack it up and stick your hands up round the joints. Do this when the exhaust is cold and have someone else start the car for you. It doesn't take long for them to get too hot.
If your'e referring to a hissing noise, that's fairly common with HFC's.
