That's wassup! Looks like I may have to really keep my eye on this one now.

DIGItonium 04-11-2013 11:45 PM

How about a ball valve? Perhaps a bypass tube around the valve is in place so that air can still flow when the valve is fully closed. This can serve as the default or minimum flow across the tube.

Jordo! 04-12-2013 12:32 AM

Nice to see this project is still on :)

Have you guys flow tested the IM? Does it actually flow significantly better than the Z intake?

Z eliminator 04-12-2013 07:08 AM

I have to get one of these's.
great work on the project !!!

Damn. You don't play

critical 04-12-2013 05:47 PM

I want one. Going to look sick.

tommyguns 04-12-2013 05:58 PM

Put me on the list! Nice work.

Any rough estimate on pricing? Sorry if it has been asked already.

Z370Z011 04-12-2013 06:59 PM

I wonder what the performances gains will be

Wow that looks amazing... Can't wait for you to finish getting it hooked up and tested.

Alstann 04-15-2013 08:27 AM

God, that looks so damn amazing. Looks like the oil cap is very accessible, too.

G37sHKS 04-15-2013 09:12 AM

Noob questions, if you officially released the adapter to fit OEM GTR intake manifold, does that mean we can use their aftermarket manifolds as well??

O&G 04-15-2013 09:16 AM

Greddy has come out w/ a very nice IM for the GTR that flows better than the stock unit.....looking forward to the results w/ this new adapter plate testing!

I would say no guarantee on fitment because the adapter height is optimized with the OEM VR38 intake collector for alignment, overall height, and fitment of custom fuel rails (required).

sfearl1 04-15-2013 02:25 PM

Noob question, what are the expected gains (if any) from the R35 plenum on a tuned/untuned NA Z?

ChrisUR 04-15-2013 02:41 PM

it looks like we found a way to keep the stock fuel rails so the upgrade gets more affordable and less complicated. You can of course use different rails, but its not a must anymore !

the oil cap now clears nicely so no new cap is needed !

as the upper flange is made to fit the GT-R manifold you should be able to use every aftermarket plenum like Greddy, Boostlogic, etc. unless its a lot higher.

Currently the only real issue we are facing is that the strut bar doesnt fit over the plenum anymore so we need to fabricate/modify it.

Chris

critical 04-15-2013 02:54 PM

beautiful. want. want. want.

awaiting N/A dyno :)

370Z JT 04-15-2013 03:04 PM

Coming a long nicely.

Just curious, does the GTR use a front upper bar? I never notice it in any engine bay pics.

Ron 04-15-2013 03:06 PM

It does, but it goes around the back on the engine.

Edit: check it out

All the wants and it hasn't proven nothing yet.

Damn yo +1, awesome idea. Especially if you maintain or gain hp! Very interested in this.

tell me there's a better looking mod than that?

DIGItonium 04-15-2013 03:53 PM

No worries. I wouldn't miss the strut bar if a better and track tested one can be fabbed like the one used in the GT-R. Maybe you can fab a "hood window" to show off the bling haha.

Looks like I'll be keeping my GT-R intake collector since no one wants it ;)

Cant wait!

Good news is i can still use my GTM high flow rails! :happydance:

Now the questions is whats the best plenum out there for R35?

Kingbaby 04-15-2013 05:48 PM

the stacks on the runners look like their can be a little shorter(not a machinist)? I remember the DE Z33 guys would rise the strut bar with a thick washer to keep the strut bar after a Motordyne spacer. How much off it the strut bar away from fitting?

Anyone who does this mod know what their geting into....

If the oil cap was an issue that can be cut and rotated towards the front, and most of the wires underneath the manifold can be re routed...

in for more...

Looks don't make HP. IMO ( as much as I'd like to see results) manifolds only benefit with FI.

not necessarily, Sasha showed that the VQ can do with a better flowing manifold...

seen here...

Also I haven't seen any before or after dyno to back this but it makes sense

Intake Manifold Runner Clean Up - MY350Z.COM Forums

ChrisUR 04-16-2013 03:13 AM

as said previously I dont know what this upgrade will do in real life although I have an idea or at least hope ;)

The runners in the stock lower manifold are squares and not really "flow improved" and they have "dents" inside for the bolt threads. The upper manifold is widely open and jagged inside so that air can flow everywhere and is not directed but only collected.

The GT-R manifold provides air flow from the throttle bodies inside the outer collectors and then divide the air into 2x3 runners where it can accelerate and is not swirled. A continued round shape provides maximum flow vs. the angular design.

For a natural aspired engine the most important thing regarding air intake is to provide as few restrictions as possible - even better is to create a situation where the engine is offered more air than it would naturally aspire, called "ram air" and is e.g. used in motorcycles. You try to force a positive pressure into the cylinders which is nothing else than a turbocharger does by brute force.

It may be that Nissan rocket engineers have calculated and designed the manifold to create maximum torque and power and that my upgrade does nothing good but from a common sense I would say we actually will see an improvement of any kind whatsoever.

But Spoon is absolutely correct - this mod has proven nothing yet and until we put the car on the dyno and compare with our runs before nobody can say it was worth the money and the effort.

@Kingbaby
the runners cannot be any lower because otherwise the upper plenum will hit the valve covers - we chose the lowest position it can go. First I was hoping to work with strut bar spacers but it showed that the GTR manifold is a lot higher than stock plus doesnt have the notch for it like the stock one has plus the stock plenum is angled towards the front while the GTR sits at a constant level.

tomorrow we will continue the welding on the lower adapter and today the upper plenum goes to the powdercoater. Stay tuned for more pics soon !

Can't wait for the results

DIGItonium 04-16-2013 08:41 AM

Will you be able to have tooling to make it easier to produce this part?

This looks super sexy in the engine bay, nice work.

ChrisUR 04-16-2013 10:28 AM

yes of course we will fabricate a rag so we can easily reproduce the adapter when everything works out !

ChrisUR 04-16-2013 03:41 PM

following Spikuhs suggestion I have updated the first post in this thread with information about parts needed to do this conversion plus a link to my facebook album for all pics from the very beginning until the most current state.

from ChrisUR Germany
1x lower GTR_2_Z33 Manifold Adapter
4x fuel rail holder for stock or aftermarket rails
2x 10mm to 6mm Hose Connectors
Xx Hose to connect to all vaccuum and water ports on the R35 plenum

from Nissan (I can also supply them with the kit)
1x - R35 Intake Manifold Plenum*1
1x - R35 Engine Cover*2
6x 16618EA000 - Z33 O-Ring Injectors
6x 166188J000 - Z33 O-Ring Injectors
1x 1661810V10 - Z33 O-Ring Fuel Pressure Regulator
2x 16175ET80A - R35 Throttle Body Gasket
1x - R35 Manifold to Plenum Gasket
2x - Z33 Head to lower Manifold Gasket

*1 you may also use 3rd party products e.g. GReddy, BoostLogic, etc. (fitment not verified yet)

*2 optional you can buy a carbon fiber cover like this from eBay

Just a suggestion. Since your initial post on the first page has a lot of broken images, you could replace it with all this information.

XwChriswX 04-16-2013 11:41 PM

Just a thought, but shouldn't those say Z34, not 33? Or are they parts from a 350 instead? :ugh2:
