LTH with HFC + CBE = ?

Looking for some input on an exhaust setup I'm thinking about purchasing after I get back from duty. I'm thinking of getting either PPE or F.I long tube headers and mating it with a Motordyne XYZ Y pipe with a cat, and 5zigen exhaust. I's a little pricey but I know that I will never have to think about the exhaust and "what if's". It will probably run me $3k+ inc shipping. My car is bone stock right now. It would be nice to just get all the work done at once. To me it doesn't make sense to buy the CBE and install it, later get the Y pipe ( 3 cats now), and then bolt on headers or w/e conceivable way. The car would sound epic and the power gains will be better than 99% of most exhausts out there besides maybe running catless. Input & or criticism would be great.

Edit:

CBE go from the cat all the way back to the muffler. the LTH go from headers to CBE, replacing the cat with a straight pipe that's connected to the header. so you will be getting LTH and 5zigen cbe

VQStryker 10-14-2011 06:42 AM

If you want the hfc then you can go with short headers (4-1) with hfc, resonated tp's, tp's, or motordyne ART pipes with the 5zigen cbe

if you really wanna go that route. just wait till the motordyne exhaust is out and then get long tubes and mate their exhaust to it, you can get a cat as part of their exhaust.

Sounds very interesting, is there a thread about this somewhere?

daisuke149 10-14-2011 09:24 AM

No, Tony hasnt started a thread yet about the exhaust. just snippets of info in some of his other threads

Gahh that's a bummer.

Are there any other options out there right now for someone who would want long tube headers but also wants at least a single cat somewhere in the exhaust?

daisuke149 10-14-2011 09:28 AM

what the OP put. doing his XYZ pipe with a cat and then finding somemthing that would mate to it.

I'd just wait though. his exhaust is almost completed.

Lol idk how I missed that. Repped anyway

SS_Firehawk 10-14-2011 09:34 AM

I can definitely hold out. I won't be home till the 1st two months of next year. Lord knows I have so many other things I can take care of :P

SS_Firehawk 10-22-2011 08:01 PM

So I picked up my premium membership to throw in some support to the site :)
I also started my ordering process... I've been like an addicted junkie in the private sales and vendor areas looking for deals. I found a couple good ones to start my modding. I found brand new PPE ceramic coated PPE LTH's for $850 + ship and a lightly used AE Performance oil cooler for $725. I'll be putting my order in for the Motordyne Y Pipe next month and watching like a hawk for their upcoming exhaust system to match. I also found a local shop through the forums "Paladin Advanced Automotive" that should be a great place for my services and installs.

or he could get the XYZ pipe with HFC too.

SS_Firehawk 10-22-2011 11:13 PM

So the new Motordyne Exhaust will have the ability to choose between straight pipe, resonator, and cat just like the Y pipe? If so, That is just flat out awesome.

SS_Firehawk 10-28-2011 02:23 AM

So... totally unrelated, I spent the better part of an hour playing Need for Speed Shift II on my computer racing... you guessed it, a 370Z. I was trying to beat my previous best lap time on Nurburgring of 8:14 in a bone stock Z. After many furious attempts at generating a near perfect lap, I did an 8:08. I definitely do not have the stones to do some of the things I did to get that.

SS_Firehawk 10-29-2011 12:47 AM

Well I picked up PPE headers for a good deal and found an AE Performance oil cooler for a solid deal also. Next purchase is the Y pipe :) I did change gears a bit with the exhaust. I've been looking at the Tanabe Medallion Touring exhaust system as it is a few hundred cheaper than the 5zigen without compromising quality. I found it brand new for under $1200 + ship. I've heard video's but not in RL. I verified inner diameter sizes of both the Y pipe and mid pipe to make sure they were the same size. What do you guys think of the Tanabe exhaust? It's slim pickings compared to all the dual exhausts I see at fair prices. It seems all the exhausts that use a Y pipe cost a small fortune and made of titanium...

SS_Firehawk 11-10-2011 12:22 AM

Well I just put an order down for NST Pulleys, Motordyne Intake Manifold and AEM CAI. Next on my list is the Y pipe and CBE. I guess I'll be answering my own question. If my wallet doesn't hurt after this... The shop will sure put the hurt on me when I take it in with a truck full of parts to get on there. After exhaust, I think I'll upgrade the drivetrain (flywheel, clutch, & LSD with cover).

Side note: Ran a 7:58 on my game now :P My thumbs hurt for the better part of two days...

SS_Firehawk 11-14-2011 06:20 PM

Intakes just came in according to the Wife. Now if that Oil Cooler would hurry the f*^k up!

SS_Firehawk 12-14-2011 11:58 PM

Well I have more parts to add :) AEM CAI (grey) came in, grey NST pulley's arrived, as did the Motordyne intake manifold. I finally got everything worked out with the oil cooler (USPS is a PITA) and I finally ordered the XYZ Y pipe. I've been trying to hold off for Motordyne to bring out their exhaust (I guess I like their products?), but I think I'm just going to pull the trigger on Tanabe. I would have ordered earlier, but I had to help the Wife catch up on $2,000 worth of tuition this past month. It kinda put a damper on my ordering process. Some things are an investment for the future and I wasn't going to let her throw education aside because of money problems she hid in the closet. So with that back on track, Tanabe exhaust will be ordered on the 1st. I'll be home from deployment by mid January; Just in time to get it installed and a tune by Paladin Automotive here in Las Vegas. This will at least hold me off until the next line of upgrades that will be targeting the drivetrain and brakes.

Maybe I should start a Journal when my parts get put on.

Bump!

I was actually thinking about this setup for a while, even before I saw this thread. I wanted something relatively quiet while making decent power; not a huge fan of super loud exhausts. I still have the stock exhaust from the y-pipe back, not ideal for ultimate power but budget/choices were limited. Later down the road I will replace this with something else.

added on this build:
FI longtube headers
Motordyne XYZ pipe w/ cat
Stillen crank pulley
Uprev tune - (done by Jack @ HP Logic)

already had:
4.08 gears - (note: Jack mentioned that these typically lower the dyno reading by ~15rwhp)
HPS intake tubes
JWT flywheel
Berk HFC's - (replaced these w/ the FI LTH's)

Comments:
-The car sounds very similar to HFC's w/ stock catback, but just a bit quieter (at idle through mid-range RPM's).
-Definitely louder at WOT now. Sorry, no sound clips.
-makes power up to 8000 RPM now
-no funny exhaust smell (doesn't bother me anyway)
-no CEL's
-some rasp on cold starts and WOT, just enough to sound good but not ricey

In the end, my Z dyno'ed ~270whp on a Mustang dyno. From what I was told, stock 370Z's put down about 230 to 240whp on the HP Logic dyno. So I'm about 30 to 40 whp more than stock. Not bad. Also, had the revlimited raised to 8000 RPM, made power up to there. Definitely would have made more high RPM power w/ CAI's and full exhaust.

I'm heading to the track this week, we'll see if I can do better than my best ET of 12.89 seconds and/or my best trap speed of 108.5 mph.

Thanks to Jnaut (J Spec Auto) for the deal on parts & install and Jack @ HP Logic for the custom tune.

I'm glad to see others are doing this. I ordered the Tanabe exhaust and is waiting for me at home. I'm finally back in the States doing the demobilizing process. I should be home the 15th. Should I start a build thread or use this one?

No Funky Exhaust smell with LTH? Interesting, that's probably the biggest reason why I didn't order them. Just didn't want my clothes to stink lol.

The reason why my setup doesnt have a funky smell is because I have a Motordyne xyz pipe that has a cat on it. See the pic i uploaded.

SS_Firehawk 01-17-2012 09:21 AM

WOOT , I'm finally home! I put about 150 miles on the Z in two days. Hopefully I can start figuring out how to get this stuff on the car. I'm a tech junky, not a mechanic. I'm thinking with a bit of oversight from one at the Nellis hobby shop, I can face drag myself through it... Or get it to a point where it may need some polish from a real wrench monkey when I bring it in for tuning. Anything you guys recommend leaving for the mechanic from my parts list?

SS_Firehawk 02-16-2012 04:47 PM

I'm finally getting the entire exhaust put on this weekend, so I'm really excited. I had to fight with the Wife to let me put it on. Tonight I'm heading up to Force Fed Tuning on Arville here in Las Vegas to get a baseline done. It's a dynojet, so I'm excited to see some results. She just got rained on so I'm gonna get her cleaned up before her big hour lol. BTW, my Z doesn't have a name, I just refer to it as a female. Any ideas? She's magnetic black... just like my Wife, only I get to drive her whenever I want. She did scare me the other day. I was merging lanes at 60mph and had TCS off. I had it in 3rd and romped it. The car broke loose and swerved into the lane I was intending on moving into. Luckily I didn't hit anyone, but I looked like a complete jackass. Anyways, I'll post up results and hopefully a video.

First and foremost I apologize about the video quality. The video is from the first run.. I did three runs total. The first run was in 4th gear, the 2nd in 3rd gear, and the last run was in 4th again. The first two runs were 265hp and 222 lb ft of torque. The last run is shown below.

SS_Firehawk 02-16-2012 10:38 PM

Got it working. Sorry about that. Exhaust and new dyno run tomorrow. Then hopefully I can get the rest installed in a couple weeks. But I think I'll def need a tune after that.

Glokwork 02-17-2012 05:11 AM

Welcome home!!! Congrats on the new mods but next time you dyno do the pull in 5th thats the 1:1 gear in our cars. Great ride and lets see some pics!

Thanks! I thought so, but they were hesitant. even after I told them I thought it was the 1:1. Now is it going to hit the speed limiter on 5th on a 6 speed? How much of a difference would that make btw? The pulls between 3rd and 4th were nearly identical. My next pulls, I'll do one 4th gear run for an apples comparison, and two 5th pulls.

SS_Firehawk 02-18-2012 02:03 AM

So I dropped my car off at the shop to get the exhaust put on. I dropped it off at 5pm and they finally got the factory headers off at 11:45 pm. The car should be ready in the morning. I feel like its the day before Christmas right now!

SS_Firehawk 02-19-2012 03:26 AM

I picked up my car earlier this evening. I'll post up videos and pics tomorrow. I did a dyno run as well with identical conditions. I enjoy the exhaust note, but there is a bit of tinny raspiness to it sometimes as well. It is still being broken in and heat cycled, hopefully some of it would go away. There is also some hissing sound, which isn't so bad. It's something that is almost expected with LTH's and free flowing exhaust. Overall I'm very satisfied with the performance and mostly happy with the sound. It's quiet at idle and cruising, and load as hell when accelerating.

tranceformer 02-19-2012 09:04 AM

get some sound clips posted!

SS_Firehawk 02-19-2012 12:13 PM

Sorry for the delay, I'm trying to figure out how to blur the license plate on one of the videos. Anyone know how to make it work?

NVM, I just redid the video for now and taped a piece of paper up just in case. I'm uploading the videos right now. Will post when complete.

Adding the Dyno sheet for now. Going to take a while for those Vids. This was on the same dyno under the exact conditions. The car is running with a CEL and no tune as well. Installed parts were the PPE LTH, XYZ Y pipe & cat, and Tanabe Medallion exhaust.

I tried to get all the different sounds from the exhaust in the video. I implemented slow acceleration, deceleration, hard acceleration, cruising, idle, and tried to show some of the drone as well. I reset the battery to clear the CEL and the idle definitely smoothed out. There are still a couple things I want to check out that are making buzzy sounds.
