How to pass emmissions with test pipes?
I live in the suburbs of Atlanta and I am thinking of getting test pipes, but here in order to renew your tag you need a yearly emissions check which I believe includes a visual inspection.
Does this mean I can't get test pipes or longtube headers? Also, going slightly off topic, since it is "illegal" to mess with the cats, I have always been curious about what can happen if I am driving past a cop and he smells the fuel smell from my car as I drive by... can he visually inspect my car for cats and give me a ticket or something? |

You have to know someone to be able to pass. There are big fines if they are caught passing illegal cars, though, so that's going to be hard to do.
And yes, I believe you can be pulled over and ticketed if they can detect that you are running illegal exhaust.

Get high flow cats.
If you get headers, I think one of the site sponsors offers a single cat that is on the end of a Y pipe, so that may work. It may even be removable via clamps -- can't recall who makes it...

Yeah, I would go with HFCs over Test Pipes just to avoid the hassle. Not to mention running TPs gets a little old because they stink!

More often than not the issue with HFCs failing inspection would be if a hard-line inspector decides to fail them after a visual inspection. It can happen, it has happened, but it's probably not very likely. They could be considered illegal because by technicality they are a modification to the emissions system, even though 99% of the time they pass smog.
