exhaust work done. Here is what my current setup is.

Erz resonated test pipes
obx y pipe w/ 3" outlet
3" matching merge (y pipe) to 2.5" straight pipe to muffler section.

Basically a header back exhaust minus the muffler.

I will be replacing the muffler with a magnaflow, or dynomax single unit in the future.

Car sounds amazing. But hiss is still there. I am going to sell the obx y pipe and give the ebay pipe a shot as a last ditch effort. The hiss gets on my nerves.

I will post a vid soon

I'm not sure that the hiss will go away... A LOT of people have it and it might just be the way the car is. It's not a really big deal to me though so i'm not gonna sweat it.

Wait -- so all the transitions now match and it's still hissing?

Somone on here did a custom X pipe set-up -- you might track him down and ask him what he did.

I think it's this guy -- and he's selling it for a steal!

Yeah, worst case I am stuck with a small his. The car sounds and performs great and I think the hiss is a casualty of war (opening up the entire exhaust system instead of a few pieces). My thoughts are now that the transition from obx y pipe to the mid pipe as a y or u is also 3" that then transitions to 2.5" was my best option. Since that didn't do the job there is no harm in changing out the y pipe and seeing what happens. Cheap part to replace and I can do it myself. Since there are very few running that pipe and jordo had the same issue, I may get lucky and fix it with a new pipe. Have not Try not.

Thanks for the responses, I do feel a lot better about the hiss. The exhaust sounds incredible minus that.

There are tons of threads that explain it, but it just boils down to the simple fact this particular motor just makes the hissing noise. The more you open up the exhaust the hiss is more noticeable. I didn't get the noise until changing out the y pipe.

With erz resonated test pipes there was no problem. I could always put the stock y pipe on to muffle it, but after feeling the difference in pickup and power, there is no way I would put that back on.

The harmonics of the engine hiss, not much you can do about it if you plan on modding the exhaust. You can get a few combinations that will not hiss. Certain high flow cat and cat back exhaust systems combine well without a hiss. I wanted to go the piece by piece route to see the power changes and sound changes from each piece myself.

I spent overall 500$ for a custom header back exhaust minus the muffler piece which I can purchase and have put on for 200$. Full cat back exhaust at the lowest end cost the same amount without test pipes and up to the mid 1500$'s for the same sound and power.

This has been a cool experience. All in all mine will be different than anyone else's and I still can play with it to eliminate the hiss. This is really what makes modding fun. If everything worked perfect the first time it wouldn't be a journey. I would be done by now unless I went forced induction.

Hoped that explained the hiss.

Who the heck cares if it hisses!! Mine hisses away! It bothered me for about 2 seconds after my test pipe install but once I felt the dif in power I coulda cared less. I could personally care less about it at this point. If it adds power its all good in my book. Sh!t if blasting opera music made may car faster people would hear me blaring Pavoratti at 100mph!

Thats great, I totally agree, good example with the opera music, that sounds like something I would say. I think because it is brand new to me I am not used to it. You are correct, I love the power the mods add and I would not go back regardless of the hiss sound.

I thought about putting the old y pipe on for about a second and it wasn't even an option. I am sure I will get used to it, but I want to take the challenge and try to figure this out. Can't hurt anything.

The pull and power difference is well worth it.

Absolutly. In all seriousness Im not sure there is anyhting you can do about it. Like someone said above I think it all boils down to the VQ engine. I can guarantee that after a little while you will barely notice it anymore.

Yeah, I totally agree it is in the nature of that motor. I am a strong believer in persist without exception. Another way of putting it in this situation, never settle until you have exploited all available options.

It is a low cost trial and error with no drawbacks. Really, I have nothing else to do on this bad boy unless I go forced induction so this is worth the energy. What else do I have to do mods wise. Interior is already beautiful, have a nice weighted shift knob, everything I need for a street car.

This will be an interesting journey. Whats the worst that can happen? It stays the same. No big deal. But again, thank you for your posts, makes me at ease and recognize a little hiss is no big deal.
