Opinions are like a$$holes.... everyone has one. This is (IMHO) a purely subjective argument, thus the many opinions. I won't spoil the debate by posting mine, thanks.

Anyone know if you can swap the G37 muffler for the 370Z muffler?
|
I agree with the OP... sounds like the G37 exhaust (and 35) is tuned for sound. You have to expect some things like that when you're paying a premium over the 370 (obviously the 370 is much more badass though lol).
The 35/37 and honestly even the 350z seem to me like they have more of a "pulse" sound to them... I was also surprised about how quiet the stock exhaust is but it didn't last long anyhow. |
to those that agree with me, thanks for reassuring me that i'm not going crazy. if you listen to any number of aftermarket exhausts (ex: youtube stillen for the g37 and 370), you can tell there is a "pulse" sound, as mattp put it, to the g37 that is simply not there on the z's.
this is most apparently to me when i'm at a local z meet, where there is a range of different exhaust setups, and listening to other z's showing up and leaving. none of them like a g or fx |
The Z & G37 do sound the same or very close IMO. I think a lot has to do with how your hearing it. I drove a G37 and the interior has a lot more insulation. I think it drowns out some of the high notes. From outside the car, they sound very close, stock vs stock.

Maybe more G drivers have their AC on compared to Z drivers? A lot more 'purring' when it's on...

The Z doesn't need an exhaust tuned for sound, it needs to be tuned for power. Its one thing to look and sound fast and another to be fast.

The 370Z and G37 exhausts don't sound much alike at all. The G37 Coupes are definitely louder. Nissan had to intentionally quiet down the 370Z exhaust, because our cars don't have trunks or anywhere near the amount of sound deadening to keep drone or unwanted noise out of the cabin. Despite the exhaust note of the G37, you can't really hear it very well inside the car because it's all getting trapped inside the trunk, as opposed to resonating into the cabin like it would on a 370Z.
It's just a consumer-influenced design choice. |
same with the 350z and the G35!
Some say it may be that extra lenght in the pipes...:dunno: |
I read the difference is due to the noise ordinance in 2009. So the G37 coupe was grandfathered in. Any case, I just bought a G37 coupe exhaust. I'll let you guys know if it's the muffler that makes the sound difference.
