The 370Z and G37 exhausts don't sound much alike at all. The G37 Coupes are definitely louder. Nissan had to intentionally quiet down the 370Z exhaust, because our cars don't have trunks or anywhere near the amount of sound deadening to keep drone or unwanted noise out of the cabin. Despite the exhaust note of the G37, you can't really hear it very well inside the car because it's all getting trapped inside the trunk, as opposed to resonating into the cabin like it would on a 370Z.
It's just a consumer-influenced design choice. |
same with the 350z and the G35!
Some say it may be that extra lenght in the pipes...:dunno: |
I read the difference is due to the noise ordinance in 2009. So the G37 coupe was grandfathered in. Any case, I just bought a G37 coupe exhaust. I'll let you guys know if it's the muffler that makes the sound difference.

glad im not going crazy. my fiance has an 08 G37S and i just got a Z. i was so disappointed to find out that the sounds are not the same. i LOVE the way hers sounds. much the same as my previous G35c...
|
I think it has to do with the length of exhaust. My Z was so raspy when I bought it that with in the first 2 weeks I had an after market exhaust on it. Now it purrs............
|
G35 and Fx even the 350z and g37 coupe have the sweetest stock exhaust note period. 370Z? Not so much.:(

I think tone is the same, especially at WOT. The 370Z exhaust is just a tad bit less aggressive. It's the same sound, but it's like they turned the volume up to "7" on the G and turned it down to "6" on the Z. |
I'm not really into the chewbacca sounds of the g35/350z and the g37 is also quiet, maybe a tad more sound than the 370z but bottomline is ya it's too quiet for a sportcar, even the Nissan frontier truck sounds meaner.

Just for the record, I'd be fine if my car made Chewbacca sounds as the exhaust.

OP just wants to purr guiz

There are not very many 370's around Sacramento so i haven't been able to tell the difference. |

As an owner of both a 350 and a 370, their exhaust notes are very different to my ears.
The 350 had that classic "VQ" sound. The 370.... especially stock... has little of anything. Even opening it up with a CBE doesn't give that same deep VQ-esque tone. Don't get me wrong- I think the 370 sounds pretty good, but it's nowhere near a 350, especially something from 2006 and prior (the HR had a quieter muffler). |
Thanks for the thread revival and agreement. Since I've made this thread, it's confirmed to my ears that our z34's don't sound as definitively Vq as the others but at least we can take comfort that we are the sports version and weigh 300lb less. If it were as light as a frs, all the better.
On another note, the amount of gas this car sucks up is horrible as a dd. a sad thing that Nissan didn't integrate direct fuel injection into the engine. Even the genesis has it |

The problem is that the Z is not a congested big-city car, especially not for NYC. You really begin to appreciate the car soooooo much once it's in a state like Florida. I used to average 17MPG in NYC. |

I'm in Orange County, FL (about 20 miles west of Orlando), and there is virtually no congestion here. But yeah, I got just around 425 miles per tank on my drive down, and I was driving really quick. |
Zombie bump from 2 years ago is owning a bunch of people :icon17:

Nobody can top my 13-14 mpg all city driving. Fast intentions hard at work stop and go driving, 20 speedbumps at my work!

The best i get is 360 miles to the tank combined, 440 straight highway. |

I agree with OP, G37 exhaust differs from 370Z.
|
The 350 and g35 exhausts sound awesome stock. Sporty and distinctive. The g37 is one step down and 370 sounds kinda like a Camry/Accord/insert family car here.
|
For the record, the G37 vs 370Z sound difference is due to the resonator and muffler difference. They use the same exact Y pipe, mid pipe is about 6" longer, and the muffler can be swapped without any problems but the tips stick out an extra 2" or so. So if anyone wants the G37 sound, swap out the 370Z resonators for G37 resonators (~$100) and get the G37 muffler (~$100). Best boom for your buck.
