Default Oiling the filter on stillen gen 3 intake?

Hey all, im about the throw on my intake. I was looking over the parts and the filters say ''Caution Oil Before Use" The instructions fail to mention anything about oiling the filters, and was wondering what was up with that. Do i need to oil them, or do they come oiled? And i thought they were suppose to be oil free filters... Thanks

The filters that come with the kit should be pre-oiled already. And they are not oil free. Your thinking of the AEM dry flow filters. Did you buy the kit brand new from Stillen? I dont remember it saying "Oil Before Use" I do remember it saying that they have been oiled from the factory and dont need to be oiled again until you clean them.

new from stillen. Would it be possible to get the oil free kind and install those instead?

I'm sure you could, just have to make sure they fit. I would talk to someone at Stillen first because sometimes they have certain sized filters for air flow and fitment.

Not really that oily, but you should see some red oil on the bag that the filters came in.

Yes you can...a friend of mine did that. Just get some of the same dimensions and you're good to go.

I felt the filters and couldn't feel any oil. Did the paper test and there was no oil marks on the paper. I had emailed Josh for clarification because I found the same...filter top says oil before use, but instructions didn't say anything. He told me to use without oiling. When I changed my oil about 1500 miles after installing the air intake, I had my engine oil analyzed and it had an abnormal amount of dirt. I checked all the G3 connections and everything was fine. Again I couldn't help thinking about not feeling any oil on the air filters, so I decided to just clean and oil them anyway. Haven't had another oil change since, but I'll get the oil re-analyzed to see if that helped.

Good input guys! I squeezed the filter between 2 of my fingers and there was an oily residue so I'm just going to throw them on there. When it time to clean them I'll just throw on some non-oil filters

If the filter paper is red then it has been oiled. My were red so I installed them without adding more oil.

Stillen uses K&N Filters on their intakes. You should to purchase a K&N Filter Recharger kit to have everything you need to service the filters. Any local auto parts store (~ $20) or vendor should have it.

Follow the directions in the box. You do not want to over oil the filters as it will impede the flow thru the filter....and make a mess behind your fascia.

Its a very easy process and takes about 15 ~ 20 minutes to do. You need to lightly coat the filters and let it soak in the filter media.

I generally clean my K&N Filters once every 3rd or 4th oil change (but it can really vary on where you live, the time of year, etc). For example, if you lived in a very dusty area or on a dirt road, I would clean it regularly. If you have an oil cooler installed, I would service the filters at the same time that you service the oil cooler (I also remove and drain my oil cooler core every 3rd or 4th oil change).

Just my thoughts...

Interesting... how much time do you all recommend before cleaning the filters? I got mine installed last December.

A good rule of thumb is about every 20k miles or sooner depending on where you live. I usually just clean off any large particles on the filter. K & N recommends every 50k miles-100k miles for re-oiling.

K&N Air Filter Cleaning Instructions

Quote:
If you have not experienced a decrease in mileage or engine performance, chances are your filter is fine and does not yet need cleaning. To be more specific, the filter does not require cleaning if you can still see the wire screen on the entire air filter regardless of how dirty it may appear. When the screen is no longer visible some place on the filter, it is time to clean it. When used in normal paved road, street or highway conditions, our replacement air filters that fit in the factory air box should require cleaning every 50,000 miles and our large conical filters on an intake system should require cleaning every 100,000 miles. When used in dusty or off-road environments, our filters will require cleaning more often. We recommend that you visually inspect your filter once every 25,000 miles to determine if the screen is still visible.
