catback exhaust and higher oil temp

some days ago i got my catback exhaust installed. great sound which fits the car very much but..... i have oil temps which i never had before. even during driving

Default catback exhaust and higher oil temp

some days ago i got my catback exhaust installed.

great sound which fits the car very much but.....

i have oil temps which i never had before.
even during driving in the city with low speed its going up to 90 very fast.
driving on german highways (which dont have speed limits in some areas) with high speed is pushing temp up to almost 120 within some kilometers and i have to slow down.

i never had this before. with original exhaust and travelling with 240 km/h on german autobahn temp went never higher than 110 / 115 even after long distances.

asking the manufacturer of the exhaust system doesnt help. they have no glue and didnt have similar problems with other cars.

anybody here who could give me a advice what this can be?
how come a catback exhaust can change the oil temp in such a big way?

hi,

its a small company in germany which is making this ones.

ff- autotechnik, you will not know them in the States.

last oil change is some 10.000 km ago.

whats surprising is really from the day i have the exhaust the oil temps jumped. i guess nothing to do with oil.

A custom tune could correct the AFR ratios if that is the case. Anything up around 110-115C is pretty normal but if you drive on the autobahn regularly then you are going to need an oil cooler.

Did they replace the stock catalytic converters? That could theoretically change the air fuel ratio but another could just be higher ambient temperatures as it is currently summer which makes a difference.

cataliytic converter still original. they didnt change.

Weather cant be the reason.

just imagine you drive saturday morning to L.A. to change your exhaust system. you drive back after some hours in the same weather conditions and the same speed.............. but your oil temp is now arround 250 and was 210 some hours ago. thats what happend to me.

to correct the AFR ratio ?! doest it mean to reflash the ECU?

Yes if you do the Uprev a reflash is required. Some dealers are willing to tweak AFR's as well.

In terms of high speed runs and sustained higher rpms, 250 degrees actually is pretty normal. 210 seems low to me, especially since you don't have an oil cooler and run at full throttle on the highway for long time periods.

Have you tried ECU reset? Might help. Also is your oil at the top? Could help a little bit. Yes, between low and high might be around 0,5l of oil, but it could make a difference. This helped to my TT 2.0TFSI in hot summer for running it cooler.

Of course you are right, higher speed and higher rpms causing higher engine temp. But already after 5 miles? I dont think so. Before i could drive 240 km/h for many many miles. Frankfurt direction border of france is a nice and free autobahn. I could drive there before long distances with full speed and temps not goinger higher than 210. Some days after the exhaust change i drive there again and i needed to slow down after 5 miles of driving fast, because i was affraid to go into limp mode.

Ah ok, I didn't realize you hit that temperature so quickly. I too suggest reseting your ECU, you can use this technique instead of disconnecting the battery which will save you having to reset the clock and windows:

1) With the key in your pocket/car, push the Engine Start button TWICE (so the car is fully on, but not started)
2) Within three seconds of the car "ON" (again NOT started), Floor (all the way down) and Release the gas pedal fully 5 times within 5 seconds. Do not do this too fast.. 1..2..3..4..5
3) Wait 7 seconds then floor the gas pedal and hold for 10 seconds. After that 10 seconds the Check Engine Light will start to blink slowly.
4) Release the pedal and floor it down once again and hold for 10 seconds. After these 10 seconds the check engine light will disappear then begin to flash much more rapidly. After you have done the following turn the car off and then back on. The ECU is now reset!!
