Custom exhaust?

The only thing I don't like about my 370 is that it's way quiet. I've been looking at a CBE system from Invidia. But I started thinking can we put a custom exhaust of our own on and be happy with the results?

Ron 05-24-2011 02:39 PM

Do you just want to make your car louder and don't mind performance? If so then I guess it'll be ok. If you do care about performance I think it would be better to get an exhaust system with proven gains, after all, these companies spend time and money on R&D and I guess most of us don't have the tools/time/knowledge to design an exhaust system.

edit: if its sound you're after then I guess you can try the washer mod lol

Sounds allright but did he loose any power through lose of back psi?

Ron 05-24-2011 03:02 PM

I tried it just for giggles and butt dyno says I lost torque at low rpms, went back to stock a couple of hours later. Other people claim they don't really feel a difference.

Dzel 05-24-2011 03:12 PM

Thanks for the input. But I can't see myself doing that to my car.

Ron 05-24-2011 03:25 PM

Exactly why I undid it the same day. Waiting on my FI exhaust now.

XwChriswX 05-24-2011 03:26 PM

F.I. ftw. So many different options and combinations gives you a myriad of options in terms of performance/sound

Dzel 05-24-2011 05:41 PM

There's a good muffler place in the adjacent town that always have imports and high end cars in there. I'll probably swing by see what they can do for me. I'll keep y'all posted.

XwChriswX 05-24-2011 05:54 PM

What is your desired budget, and what would be your breaking point for cost? Just to get an idea of what you're looking to spend...

Dzel 05-24-2011 06:12 PM

At this current time no more then 200 bucks. I was actually just wanting to keep my tips and only replace the mufflers itself.

Ron 05-24-2011 06:16 PM

muffler delete or replace with different cans?

Dzel 05-24-2011 06:19 PM

Not so much a delete as a more aggressive output I guess. Now that I think about it I would have to change out the tips due to the outlet diameter.

Boost_lee 05-24-2011 11:46 PM

a muffler delete with custom tips sounds pretty aggressive in person...

Dzel 07-25-2011 06:28 AM

I installed some CNT test pipes to the stock exhaust and am pretty pleased with the outcome nice sound at 3-4k Rpm. Saving up for my FI exhaust now unless I come across something cheaper.

Astrosfan 07-25-2011 04:19 PM

i believe a new y-pipe will result in a more agressive sound? Correct me if im wrong, but there is thread titled "cheap Y-pipe" or something like that goes into further detail. I purchased one with some berk hfc's they just got installed but i havent heard them yet since the damn bodyshop still has my car.

if it does, its only $140 shipped and cant be too much to install.

edub370 07-25-2011 04:43 PM

install is free if you have a jack and 30 minutes to do it. be aware though, that i have a car with a Y-pipe and test pipes (a little different than hfc) and it is very raspy if you leave the stock muffler on

I can get you pricing on invidia... I see what you're saying but there are many options out there, is a custom exhaust really worth it?

Dzel 07-25-2011 05:59 PM

For the price I think so but in the long run no. I'll be running an amuse kit so I'm gonna want a nice looking CBE since the rear is open around the muffler area

you might as well wait until then for a custom exhaust... you could look for a nice muffler and then get a straight pipe made

edub370 07-25-2011 08:11 PM

cnt is running a special for $499 and top speed is also around the $500 mark. Both are great quality and cheap

98intrigue 07-25-2011 08:20 PM

I'm getting a custom single exhaust made. Just for the piping from the downpipe to my already purchased 3" HKS Ti muffler, it's going to be $650 for all stainless steel piping and v-bands...and that's from a friend who works out of his garage. A shop wanted to charge me $1200 for 3" piping, HKS muffler, and all v-bands. I was actually surprised how expensive it is...

Dzel 07-26-2011 08:44 AM

98 just reminded me I'll be purchasing either the stage 2 GTM SC or the STS rear turbo so I might as well just wait on purchasing an exhaust. I looked at the CNT CBE also but haven't seen any dyno numbers along with a good price I want performance as well.
