Modified stock air box

Has anyone modified the stock air box at all? I mean maybe drilled some extra, strategicly placed holes, possibly on the side facing the front of the car, where some extra cool air could be pulled in. I havnt had a chance to pull mine yet and look to see. I have done this on many of my cars with very noticable results. I dont want to do the long tube cold air intake, and the short ram intakes look like they will be suckig in hot engine compartment air.

Modshack did a ram air mod. Search the threads and you'll find it.

The stock air boxes are effectively cold air intakes from the factory. There is a short plastic tube that directs the air to the air box filter compartment, collecting air from behind the front fascia.

There are only a few minor tweaks that can be done to make it better, such as cutting holes in the fascia (Mine's nose holes) or extending the tubing to collect from another fascia opening (fang vents etc). The second tweak it is to replace the corrugated intake tube sections with something smoother, such as silicon. And finally you can replace the stock air filters with something that lets a little more air (and dirt) in.

I did find the DIY by modshack. Pretty cool, but I may not want to do all that hosing. I do want to open those 2 fang corners, but just to get more air into the engine compartment. I need to pull the stock air boxes and see how things look in there and see if I can do some minor tweeking. I have seen the air box extensions that stick out forward for cool air. I always like to do a little more, but I promised myself no more excessive modding!! after 25 + cars, i wanna just be happy with the car......almost ;) This is the ONLY thing I may do......really!!

The stock air boxes are held in by one bolt on top and one snap clip on the bottom. Just remove the top bolt and pull the whole box straight up firmly.

Thanks Chris!

The stock intakes do really good up until about 6500-6800 rpm. If you dyno the car and look at the mass air flow in the intakes verses rpm the curve goes fairly flat at the above rpm range. Long story short, any gains are most likely to be had from ~6500 rpm and up.

I guess the sound is pretty cool though with different intake pipes on…..
