What is the purpose of the vertical piece set back in the tips?
Does it help to give its distinctive sound, like a reed in a wind instrument?

it's to accelerate the exhaust gasses out the tips, physically. However with that size and distance from the manifold, it's more of a gimmick than anything. Distinct appearance, for sure. But unsure of its actual effectiveness.
