Berks Hi-Flow Cats / Replace Exhaust - Are you paying for sound ??
Is there any re-mapping to go with this install to rep the benefits?
It seems to me that if you are spending a couple of grand on the BERKS for example and a new exhaust ( Nismo, Stileen )....take your choice, then with no re-map to read the new flow, then you are spending money on changing the sound only. Matter of fact is anyone with this new HFC getting an engine warning light? Turbo engines benefit greatly on a free flowing system with a substantial increase in HP/TQ numbers....just can pin down the same benefits for normal aspirated engine, at least not with some re-mapping to go along with it. Is it all just noise??? Comments? |
worng. HFC and Cat back will produce gains with no remaping. It has been proven on the G37S. However intakes are a different story. Intages show low gains until a tune is done. Intakes is where you will want the tune not needed to see good gains from your HFC's and catback.

I thought after a new mod the ecu would recalibrate itself back to normal and any gains would be lost without a reflash.

Hence causing an engine code ( red light on the dash )

^ not necessarily.
The ECU relearns some of the parameters.. it doesn't add to the performance. It actually often might even take a little away as it enriches the fuel mix a little to account for leaning out. It is built to learn to correct itself so that it runs at certain parameters, not built to learn how to take advantage of addons. That does't mean there aren't gains to be had without a tune though... you will make more power, just nowhere as much as you would with a good tune. |
A friend of mine writes engine mapping software, and has hacked ECUs, but I have to say that there are so many constantly changing variables, that I believe that anyone changing their engine mapping is better off having it done by a highly experienced person, who is dealing directly with your vehicle's setup versus software uploads as they only account for general parameters, with typical mods—it's that serious of a business. Sure you can change many parameters yourself with a software/hardware setup, but you'd better know what you are doing.
