Budget Y pipe: JIC Magic or OBX

I have Berk HFCs and am looking for a Y-pipe. I would prefer one that does not cost $500, although Tanabe seems to be the best choice in terms of quality/performance. That aside, the two best budget options to me are OBX for $200 Shipped and JIC Magic for $318 Shipped. The Megan Racing and Top speed are other budget options but both look similar and look almost identical to stock other than being larger diameter. All are 2.5" in and 3" out and are available on ebay.

JIC Magic looks more like Tanabe than OBX, and it appears that there would be better flow because the 2 pipes come together at less of an angle on OBX. Trying to decide if the JIC Magic is worth $118 more than the OBX. Any thoughts?

i think in the long run you might be better off w/ the JIC... i dont know how long the OBX ones can withstand the heat before their flex parts rip

x2 satisfied with mine and youl get a deeper tone

The JIC also has smoother bends and a better collector which means more power. I would spend a little more coin for the JIC pipe since it looks to be better in both quality and design.

Thanks to all for the input. I was hesitant about the OBX to begin with, but this confirms JIC for me. It helps that a few of you already have the JIC with no issues.

Christian - saw some of your posts with making same or better power with HFC and JIC y pipe... very encouraging for me since I want to keep the car fairly quiet.

I actually have a Tanabe Y pipe but it has the same diameters as the JIC y pipe so the performance/sound difference should be negligable. My intake/HFC/Y pipe setup nets the same if not more power than some intake/cat-back exhaust cars that have dyno'ed at the same dyno.

Don't forget about Exhaust Depot as well!

G37 Y-pipe

thats the one i'd buy, support the american economy:tup:

Fed Hill Z 11-07-2010 04:29 PM

I'm into buying American when possible. Have either of purchased anything from exhaust depot in the past?

nogoodname 11-07-2010 04:40 PM

Exhaust Depot dropped the ball on quality. The welds are crap now. Get the JIC one.

Maybe it was a one time thing but the damage was done!

PM if you wanna see the thread. It's on another forum.

Guys, just pulled the trigger on the JIC Y pipe, Will be going to Dyno after installation. I will have installed K&N drop ins, ERZ HFC, JIC Y Pipe. My goal is 300 whp for know. Also the dyno pull should be done in 5th gear correct? and the VDC off I suppose. Any recommendations:ugh2:

efuseakay 11-08-2010 02:51 PM

4th gear. You will hit the speed limiter in 5th.

Hello, What Y-pipe did you end up getting? I am looking into this too. Does your Z sound better and seem to perform better?

Thanks :tiphat:

Fed Hill Z 11-12-2010 06:18 AM

I almost ordered the JIC Magic but actually ended up settling on an OEM NISMO exhaust. It is only costing me $500 vs. $318 for just the y pipe. From what I have read, the gains with the OEM NISMO vs. y pipe would be similar. Plus, I like the way the tips look on others with the NISMO. I am picking it up and hopefully putting it on this weekend.

i just bought an s-tune exhaust. i was gonna do the whole y-pipe thing and then go from there, but i love the nismo sound too much, plus the s-tune pipes are 2.4" all the way rather than tapered down real bad like the nismo z exhaust.

PR370z 11-13-2010 06:03 PM

Instaled my JIC magic y pipe today, the quality of this pipe looks really good. The sound is definitely louder/ deeper mched almost perfect to my ERZ HFC's (around a 2.3'" inside diameter). But on the back end the y pipe has around a 2.8" ID and the stock exhaust is around 2.3". Should I leave it like that? Should itry to make the stock exhaust a little bigger (grinding or sanding)? I there any noticeable hp loss from this?

Thanks for the help:ughdance::ughdance:

Hey dude, On you y-pipe you mentioned it had a larger diameter at the end and the stock has less, what did you end up doing? Did you notice a gain/loss of performance? I am looking to get the OBX y-pipe. Thanks :tiphat:

Vince's Red-Z 01-31-2011 07:53 PM

OBX Y Pipe

Well, Saturday (1/30) I installed my OBX Y pipe. OBX has a real good product, good welds, good grade tubes; nice. There was a good noticeable increase of hp and torque however, it seemed to make my Z quieter :roflpuke2: I also didn't care for the 3" exit into the 2.8 on the stock pipe leading to the OEM muffler. The gains make up for the sound but, I had a feeling I should have just waited till I could have bought a full cat back (gains+sound). For now it is ok, I guess its back to the "drawing board":icon14:. I have my eye on the Invada Genesis; one day, one day... (any donations?) :roflpuke2:

JollyGoodChap 02-01-2011 11:28 AM

a little off topic but didn't JIC pull out of the US?

Megan quality has really improved in the last few years. I'm starting to see less and less "horror" stories about their stuff.

GZ3 02-02-2011 11:07 PM

does anyone have a dyno of the OBX pipe?

They will all be pretty much the same as they have the same inlet/outlet diameters and a similar design.

seems like you pay for the option of adding another resonator, and i dont see the benefit of a two-piece y pipe design. But hey maybe im wrong

Yeah, i think a straight pipe, resonator and a CAT can be added to it. In design the OBX and the XYZ look very similar

Vince's Red-Z 03-16-2011 04:33 PM

Not sure if your in the market still for a y-pipe. Mine is for sale, OBX.

Vnismo370z 04-30-2013 02:35 AM

Where did you guys find the JIC Ypipe?

Sh0velMan 04-30-2013 07:32 AM

Holy necro post, Batman!

I think that JIC Y Pipe is a thing of the past.

Never seen it on any vendor or even on ebay.

I do like the OBX design though.
