What are these pieces on the intake?

When you remove the big one on the driver's side to install the COBB tubes, the sound doesn't change at all. Perhaps Nissan was just trying to make the car

When you remove the big one on the driver's side to install the COBB tubes, the sound doesn't change at all. Perhaps Nissan was just trying to make the car heavier and bias even more weight up front...
