Stock Nismo Exhaust Needs More Growl

Hi Guys,

Looking to get a little more growl from my stock 2010 Nismo exhaust.

I'm not looking to spend over 1000 on a crazy exhaust system yet,
I'm thinking something closer to $500.

Growl is good, HP is a bonus..

So with that in mind, are Berk HFC the best option?

Also something pretty straight forward (bolt-on), that is also not going to be blowing engine lights/codes,
or causing me other problems.

Remember this is a Nismo stock exhaust..

Thanks :tiphat:

theDreamer 07-25-2010 01:24 PM

HFC is a great option, definitely add some needed growl and a nice performance bump.

SE 07-25-2010 01:28 PM

Get a test pipe/HFC and remove the stock resonators in the exhaust. That's what I did with mine.

red6spd 07-25-2010 01:28 PM

HFC or Test Pipes... With test pipes being the much louder option.

TROOPER 07-25-2010 01:28 PM

Well Berk seems to be the brand of choice I've noticed on here.

My only concern with playing with the Nismo exhaust, is that I understand most of the HP gains over the base Z's is the Nismo exhaust system.

So although my goal is not really HP gains but more growl,
I also don't want to lose HP in the process.

And a side note, are the Berk HFC the same part number for both base model and nismo?

OK, dumb question I keep hearing the term Test Pipes, what are they? LOL

Aren't they just straight pipes that replace the cats?

I'd like to at least try and be able to pass the emissions test LOL, at least the visual check ;)

Yep. 370Z Nismo and the other models share the same components except the actual catback exhaust.

SE 07-25-2010 01:32 PM

Oh and you'll definitely make more power with the HFC over stock.

red6spd 07-25-2010 01:39 PM

Yea a Test Pipe is a straight pipe, not cars no resonaters nothing. The ones Fast Intentions sells should keep your CEL off, you wont pass a visual but I have never failed from a visual inspection. Its rare

TROOPER 07-25-2010 01:49 PM

Well HFC seems like the direction to go then :)

So is Berk the forum favorite? ....Or is that going to start a war LMAO

Berk has an awesome sound. Be prepared to wait months for delivery.

Berk buys from a 2nd source, they do not fabricate their own pipes. The wait time is excruciating. I got lucky when I bought mine. I think the current group buyers have been waiting since April for their exhaust. If you don't mind waiting (it sounds like you want the growl NOW), it's a great choice.

TROOPER 07-25-2010 02:38 PM

Is it really that bad getting them.

I saw them in TheZstore.com, you think there's a long wait with them also.

Although saying that, I've ordered a couple of things from Z store, only to be told my order is 8 weeks backorder. I just cancelled my orders with them LOL

There is no real wait for HFC, the wait is for the Berk exhaust.

neveucd 07-25-2010 03:58 PM

And I've had to wait for almost everything from the z store because of back orders...go berk or fast intentions HFC's to stay legal and still get power.

TROOPER 07-25-2010 04:17 PM

Thanks guys, I think the Berk HFC is the route to go.

And yeah, I'm giving up on theZstore LOL.

F1loco 07-26-2010 07:11 AM

I'll let you know what TP on stock NISMO sounds like this week, unless I also decide to cut on the resonators as well...I think part of the problem, aside from the huge can on the rear, is the dual nature of the exhaust.

fuct 07-26-2010 08:38 AM

anyone care to elaborate on cutting out the resonators? im curious. thx

I did it and had HFCs paired with it and it made a noticable sound difference and its cheap and quick. Cut out the resonators and weld striaght pipe up in the gap to replace it. If you don't like it weld the resonators back in.

Good tip, but think I'll stick with bolt-ons right now.

So I'm still looking at getting some HFC.

How do the Stillen compare to the Berk HFC's ??

A friend of mine got the Stillen's and wasn't too happy...He complained about rattling and also said that it wasn't 100% stailnless steel...He had put a magnet up against it and it stuck onto the HFC's...

The Berks on the other hand are 100% stainless steel and give you great power gains...I beleive M. Bonnani reported 18-19whp on a dyno when he had just the Berks HFC's paired with the stock CBE....Berks also seems to be the most popular brand used amongst 370 owners.

TROOPER 08-08-2010 06:52 PM

Yeah I had noticed Berk was a popular choice, I just spotted some Stillen HFCs for sale and thought I'd ask.

Might be a concern if Stillen are advertising these as stainless steel if they're not.

Think I'll wait untill I find the Berk's then :)

There's a special going on under the GB section for the Berks HFC's...Check the thread out and ask for a PM for the prices...From what I heard they're the cheapest you can get brand new...

Thanks for the link :tiphat:

:icon18: Cool...

Just in case you wanted to read up on it here is a link to an old thread regarding the Dyno results for the Berks HFC's

TROOPER 08-08-2010 08:36 PM

SWEET.. you're the man..!! (+1)

I just PM'd Kyle about a price on the Berk's ;)

Matt 08-08-2010 09:08 PM

Pairing the Berk HFCs with my stock Nismo exhaust really increased the "growl" of the engine, especially between 4k and 6k RPMs.

It still didn't provide the full sound I was looking for, which I got later by installing the Berk CBE, but it did compliment the Nismo CBE well.

bucketman 08-08-2010 09:15 PM

Yep the HFC with the nismo exhaust sounds a lot better and really howls when you get to the upper RPM's. Got mine from Kyle at IPP, great deal and awesome customer service!

There you have it....From a Nismo owner himself!!!!

TROOPER 08-09-2010 05:55 AM

WooHoo, that's what I'm looking for ;)

And as Matt says, if I need more I'll add a CBE later.. Once I've sold my other kidney to pay for it LOL

F1loco 08-09-2010 06:54 AM

I've got stock NISMO with GTM test pipes...still unimpressed...someone was posting this set up with a muffler delete and stock resonators in place (video to be up soon, I hope)...otherwise, I'm looking at maybe putting two magnaflow 6" race cans on the rear to keep drone down but give it more grunt...I hope...

Got my name on the list for this group buy, hope to have order in on Friday :)

fuct 08-09-2010 02:51 PM

i installed CNT resonated test pipes last week. they DID NOT add any kind of growl. they did however make my car sound like a jet at take off. neat sound, but not the throaty growl i was looking for.

I second that bro, I have the F.I. Non res test pipes on my Nismo, and it's still painfully quiet.

Really?? I found a few clips on YouTube of Nismo exhausts and Berk HFCs, they sounded pretty good.

I thought test pipes would be even louder, since they must be less restrictive??

The Nismo exhaust does a really good job of keeping things quiet. The test pipes do make an audible difference, but it's nothing like changing the entire exhaust. For example with the windows up and the radio on an average level I can't tell any difference, only with the windows all the way down.
