We have a aussie company that does this via the mufflers.
XForce - Performance Exhaust Systems To my knowledge they are developing a 370z exhaust |

Electric cutouts prior to the OEM muffler might be an interesting idea if you did not want to do a full exhaust, but I dont think there will be much in power gains department. They are also prone to failure at times, depending on the quality of the gearing in the cutout.
I would not put them any close to the motor than the rear muffler area though if I were you, otherwise you risk significantly changing the exhaust flow criteria into the lean direction and dumping VERY hot exhaust under the car. Also, if you do it make sure you get two obviously for the exhaust setup these cars come with. |

Man oh man do you guys have these ALL wrong. Cutouts go in you downpipes, after you buy the turbo kit, with side exits for maximum spool. you wan't to talk sounds bitchin try a twinturbo spooling with only 20" of pipe behind it.

I know this is an old post but I had some questions for anyone that has this or knows a lot about it. Ive read about it and from what I understand, you can control it so you can run either stock exhaust (or whatever exhaust you have installed) or run it wide open bypassing the exhaust. Has anyone done this? I think it would be a pretty good idea but obviously i dont know which is why im asking.

911's have this exhaust option in Germany (and probably in the US, too?).
I've driven it there and didn't like it - made the experience feel really fake. Flip the switch and it starts barking. In my mind there is no point. Plus, on the Carrera S it made the exhaust sound like a chain smoker coughing. But, just my five cents. They do work... |
Well see, maybe the Z will sound better. If not, I'll just keep it closed until I need the extra power ;)

Vinny did you ever install the cutouts? If so what brand did you purchase?
|
Yes, I did. I got them from quick time performance (QTP).
I gotta say, with the flap open, it sounds MEAN! I can hear my turbos spooling, and after 4k rpm it goes from a growl to an exotic scream. |
