What is the difference from a sound/power/engineering/performance/etc between the aftermarket exhausts for our cars tht are dual like the stock design vs the single pipes back to the dual/single mufflers |

I think it depends on the engine, the diameter/design of the piping, and other piecs of exhaust in the system.
For some cars, a Y pipe sized correctly will allow for optimum backpressure and power. For other cars, it's the X-pipe. For our 370z, it appears the X-pipe is providing the most top end hp/torque, along with the most volume. Some people choose the Y-pipe systems, possibly for less weight, lower volume, or in the case of some cars, higher low-end torque (not sure if that's the case with the Z). None of this is backed up by any facts, whatsoever, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night.

I agree w/Matt. I think the Y pipe exhaust will offer more back pressure and thus greater mid range torque while the X pipes offer higher top end numbers.
I did not stay in a Holiday Inn however... |

Thus far I think Fast Intentions has the greatest proven gains and they run an x-pipe. Personally I think the Y pipe designs sucks and I think Nissan thinks so as well. Figure this, we all agree that the stock exhaust y pipe is very restrictive, but when Nissan developed the Nismo exhaust they dropped the y pipe design for an h pipe. If Nissan didn't think the y pipe was worth designed and maximizing further I can't see how it could be the "best."
