Going back to stock intakes?!!

It seems like my Stillen gen2 intakes are taking away from the exhaust note. I even have HFC's and in videos (atleast) it sounds like alot of noise is from under the hood. Correct me if I'm mistaken but it doesn't seem quite right to me...I don't hear the gurggle of the VQ as much at WOT :( http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/...h_MOV03477.jpg

AK370Z 05-25-2010 10:47 PM

that's interesting because it sounds fine from outside. Any reason why you went with Gen 2 instead of Gen 3? Intake growl is a good thing. Just my :twocents:

SophiaZ 05-25-2010 10:51 PM

I opted for the g2's becuz I'm afraid of hydro-locking with water intake of the g3s...seems too low to the ground for my comfort. I'm just a little disappointed that I can't hear the exhaust as well as I thought I would. Buuut than again..it's not the best video neither haha. Just wondering if any other intakes are better sounding or if stockers would make the exhaust more noticable

Trips 05-25-2010 10:52 PM

Gen 3 would have been my choice, it sounds pretty good from the outside, but the short style of the Gen 2's like that of the takedas will produce a throaty sound in the engine compartment under wot.

hydro-lock on the Gen 3 is almost impossible, unless you submerge the Z on a river crossing. lol

:iagree: If you can hydro lock Gen 3, there may be other problems you have to fix/repair ;).

I think your car sound fine. But if you want to go back to stock and see how things are , that's totally up to you.

On the side note, do you know any long stretch where I can make some videos? I like the place you're shooting your video.

Yeah, I shot the video in an industrial park in Swedesboro, NJ (South Jersey) Has a pretty decent stretch, has a nice curve but a few dips in the road. Also those daymned security cops. They haven't gotten me yet, but I get nervous haha. If ya ever wanna meet..let me know.

Yes, you'll be fine, If it was a problem we would of heard about from many Gen 3 Owners, the same with Ingen lntakes, I've driven in heavy rain here in cali with no problems.

SophiaZ 05-25-2010 11:07 PM

Will it really be worth it tho to switch? I don't want to waste $600 or whatever it costs for almost no other gains

I don't know man, I don't think I'd push my luck with the Injen in the puddle :ugh:

http://www.thezstore.com/store/graph...arge112925.jpg
It goes down too deep

haha... I exactly know how Sophia feels. It floods EVERYWHERE here! I was coming from NJMP track one day in very heavy rain, I had to tackle anywhere from 2" to 6-7" of flood water. I was driving through them like this :ugh:

There were times, I woke up 5 in the morning to move my car as my street floods (not because of rain but due to tide. I live next to the bay ) My worst was Z tires were completely under water as it was parked. This why I have the flood warning app on iphone and I park my car end of the street (if I see warning).

I'll check out the spot (maybe shoot a video or two with your Z) sometime in future

I haven't looked at the dyno results between them but I'm guessing Gen 3 produce a little more hp. Now I was only answering your concerns about the worries on hydro-lock, thats for you to decide if it's worth the hp gain, you can sell your Gen 2 to offset the cost if you decide to change. :tiphat:

No. If anything you can try the stock setup. If you feel that you want to go back, you can go back to Gen 2 (that you already have)

This is a good advice too.

Dam! if you guys have that much rain you guys might want to invest in life preservers..

SophiaZ 05-25-2010 11:20 PM

 Thanks guys! I think I do want to put the stockers back on just to hear the difference with the F.I. exhaust and cats, but don't see it being a permanent thing as I'm just curious. And worst case, I'll just keep the Gen 2's instead of buying Gen 3's.... waste of money IMO since I won't get nearly what I bought them for if I was to sell them. I learned that with my old exhaust and cats :( And AK...I'm still searching for good strips of road to play on :) I'll let you know if I come across anything good. ( Are you from South Jersey or North?)

snapping 05-25-2010 11:20 PM

if you were to get the g3 you might even have to get a tune because they do make you run lean so that would have to factor into your decision...sorry for ruining your 3 way chat haha.

:ugh: I hope you know your limit (and not addicted to it). I know so many people who makes 6 figure income but due to their "gambling" problem, they are in debt!

Where do you play Borgata? Once in a blue moon, I'll play those sport car giveaway slots. But I don't gamble at all.

Trips 05-25-2010 11:32 PM

Don't They Have a Fat Burger in the Borgata so I've heard?

craniac24 05-25-2010 11:33 PM

I think if you put the stock intakes back, you're going to miss the sound that comes from your engine bay...

SophiaZ 05-25-2010 11:36 PM

No..I'm not THAT big of a gambler..I'll take like 2k every 6-8 months and play roulette for abit and hit up some slots...my fav is Ceasars, probably cuz I always get free rooms there haha. But now with the new house coming, expensive Z car note, and sick azz english bulldogs...the gambling fun has diminished :( But saving up for an August 13th playdate with Ceasar, if the hubby'll take me haha GOTTA GO ON FRIDAY THE 13TH'S..MY FAV DAYS OF THE YEAR

Good luck  If you see a blue Z driving around in Atlantic or Pacific Ave, wave :hello:. I have the ONLY blue Z in the area (unless Tony is in the town :ugh2:):icon17:

Ok. I'll keep my eyes peeled :) And if you see a short haired tattooed chick.........oh, wait..there's alot of them nowadays...but it could be me! haha If you see the murdered out Z..it's ME!

Confirmed. The lines are almost always huge though. Be prepared to wait as much as 30 minutes.

The Gen 3's do make a significant amount more horsepower, with a touch more involved install, as the tubes go through the core support and in front of the radiator. Does also bring the sound more out of the cabin a touch, but not with the windows down. :)

Actually not the case, the Gen 3's don't cause a lean condition, but with a full setup including a cat-back, HFCs and Headers it will, and will require a tune.

There is no issue with either HFCs or Headers.. both become the lean condition.. Just to set everything straight.

Sorry if this has been said already, but you are not in danger of hydrolocking even with the Injen intakes. They sit well over a foot off the ground and are covered. If you somehow manage to flood your engine with them on you are pants-on-head retarded.

I understand the fear but this isn't the Oregon Trial people! Do not attempt to ford any rivers and you should be fine.
