Customizing FI catback
So I got my KW V3s installed and I cannot get up my driveway..
I kinda know that the rear cans hang a little low as the edge is the closest point to the ground. lowered 1" now I scrape and am going to adjust so my ride height is 1/2" higher.. I got a quote to install smaller cans with new flanges and 2 1/2" piping that are smaller and will have a flatter angle or have more clearance at the rear so I dont have to worry about scraping anywhere.. Anyone do this to their FI or can post up custom exhausts? |
I feel your pain. I am lowered 1.5 inches and I have the FI CBE with carbon fiber cans, and in 1 spot I have scraped so much that it has worn past the carbon fiber and quite a bit into the metal under it. I have debated what I will do when it scrapes enough away to give me a leak. I still don't know what I will do.

Well, this is kinda disheartening...
|
Just don't lower. It's only for looks anyway... and if you're tracking your car, get a beater for a daily driver. ;)

I'm lifting it 1/2" and installing smaller canisters. |
I mentioned this in the FI Catback thread - that perhaps the best option would be to cut part of the can and make a flat spot that is parallel to the ground.
Whip out the big disk grinder, grind off the lowest portion maybe .5" up then weld over a flat stainless steel piece that will fit the hole. Then again, I don't know what the inside structure of the cans are, but, as an idea, it's flawless! :) Or, worst cast, sell the FI catback and get something else. |

Ride height does impact performance as well as looks... |

Hawaii roads aren't great, so that is why I wanted it .5 to 1 inch low,....but it's really my driveway and not the city streets for me raising it back up,.. |
I just had my KWs installed too, as long as you only lower your car an inch you should be fine. I also have the F.I. 18" CF Exhaust
|
According to my mechanic...it was only an inch... I dont everywhere,..its just my driveway if you look at how steep it is in my pics..
Its the one with the Nissan Titan parked at the top... http://i44.tinypic.com/16b0ti1.jpg |
Nice car man... sucks about the driveway tho... Whenever I plan on taking the 370z out for a ride, I have to plan my moves ahead of time and take different routes if I know there are some shady roads and driveways.
One of the downsides of having a sports car I suppose. |
Mod your driveway to accommodate your Z.

I was thinking that,..but it really is only at the juncture where the sidewalk to my driveway has this change in angle. Basically, the rear cans are dragging on the sidewalk, which I cannot alter or change as this belongs to the City and County of Hawaii.
I could get sued or taken to court if anyone got hurt or injured (ie handicap electric chair).. |
I don't know why you'd even bother going with FI if you're just going to murder the mufflers.
The "best" solution if you have to modify the system would be to mount the existing cans horizontally in the factory muffler location and fab some new pipes. This will obviously change the sound a bit and might hurt performance, but it would at least salvage most of the system. I would give Tony a call and see what he thinks your best option is. |

Here you go. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...19/16b0ti1.jpg |
That would be a steep *** drop for the titan lol
|
Ahhhh xD He can plow through the neighbor's yard.

Muffler shop is going to make new flanges and pipes to their own cannisters similiar to the layout of the FI system. It will offer better clearance due to it being smaller cannisters and being welded/made at a different angle. That way I can always bolt the FI piece or sell as a set if I ever decide to. The shop Im going to does great work as they make custom TI catbacks for cars with clean welds,...I thought I give them a try since I used to get my Subaru Legacy GT dyno tuned there a few times... |

Anyways, post up some vids of the new custom setup so we can hear it. |
just gotta do what it takes...
Its not like Im going to die if it changes the sound as doing somethingg like installing my Hi Flow cats will change the sound as well..so,...no big deal on sound change... As long as performance is the same or better is what matters, especially if this means being a viable DD and that there will be no damage to the car...Im going to dyno tune later if COBB comes out with something or do an UpRev dyno tune..I have several places/people in mind right now.. What is the use of keeping the sound intact if your FI mufflers are hanging or left for dead in the middle of the road? |
Well, what I really meant by keeping the sound in tact is reusing the FI mufflers. By going with an unknown you run the risk of your car sounding like crap.
|
Not sure if putting a more free flowing exhaust can make it sound worse. It will sound different, but sTill sound Good. I had the heiGhT adjusted so I won't be changinG The cans,...if anythinG, I'll mY pick up a different exhaust if a good deal comes around.
Amuse or Ti type exhaust comes to mind,.. |

any chance it would clear by going up (or down) the driveway at an angle?

for some reason it was using Alphas on certain letters... And going at an angle would help, but my driveway isnt that wide...I got it all fixed tho as ride height was adjust so it wasnt slammed...I also just lowered the front 1/4" as its only the rear that had the driveway problem... |
I'd just love to be in Hawaii...until I had to buy something. :D
