Some people connect a hose to their tailpipe and channel the exhaust back into their car to kill themselves, and it's not like they remove their cats before doing this. Heck, some people just shut their garage doors with the car running and even that will do the trick. So obviously cats aren't reducing the CO levels to insignificant levels. With LTH, test pipes, etc., the difference is that the exhaust gases -- dangerous as they are -- are being ejected all the way out the back via the tailpipes. The gasses aren't leaking out underneath the car. If they were, that would indeed be cause for concern, and I don't think that changes just because you have stock cats on.

Now, having said all that, I don't think you need to worry unless you have a habit of just sitting in your car with the engine running at idle for extended periods of time. Just driving forward should negate any danger from the gap in your exhaust.
Thanks for your response! I know the cats are not completely depleting the harmful gases, but when people do that.. (running hose to their car, not opening the garage) I think what is killing them is the carbon dioxide. Of course, there will be some monoxide, etc. but the carbon dioxide itself is pretty dangerous as well. Like sniffing your own fart for long periods of time.
Well, when people run LTH, test piptes, etc. shouldn't the people behind them worry? I mean in traffic you would be spitting out harmful gases straight to their car/intake/windows/etc..

I don't know about you, but that's something I try to avoid. LOL.

I guess. But I don't think it's worse than getting stuck behind some nasty dump truck or whatever spewing out clouds of black diesel exhaust. Actually you know what I hate the most? School buses! I hate getting stuck behind those things. Their tailpipes are right there at the perfect level to dump all the exhaust into your vents, and I the fumes are just nasty! Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's no reason to single out sports cars with cat-deletes when there are so many other nasty vehicles out there that seem to get a free pass (at least in my area). Heck, in my area, dump trucks don't even need license plates! So they drive around spewing out rocks to chip everyone's paint, and you can't even track them down to complain or ask for compensation.

Ah hehe true.. I'm just wondering though because I am a noob and I don't know much about the mechanical aspects of a car. However, I am pretty much capable of identifying and classifying cars! I've loved cars since I was little.

Just curious about the monoxide stuff since I don't want to die.

Hi Modshack! I might be misunderstanding you, but are you implying that I don't believe that this mod will kill me like the people that did not believe in Darwin?

I'm confused

Out of pure curiosity and the fact that I can't visit youtube at work, I added the washers to my muffler. It really sounds good. I manual-shifted all weekend and even had my neighbor do fly-bys. Thanks Gunzero for making my Z sound better. At least until I get my catback.

Haha sounds awesome huh! No problem.. all credits go to "ddharon"

I had my dad do the same thing xd it sounds good from the outside as well
The exhaust sound amplifies when you go past 3k rpm and has a nice tone to it.

You have an automatic 370z I assume?

I suppose if he lives in the Boonies he's safe, but if he has a habit of sitting in Houston rush-hour traffic, he might lose a few brain cells

Hey gunzero, what sizes were the washers used? And how many did you use per side?

without a doubt I am doing this in 3 weeks when I get a break from the hospital. To think that I was about to pull the trigger on a $1200 + catback I don't really care about the gains... I just want a nicer tone.
Thanks for the great Idea.

I used 16(4 for each stud) three eighths stainless washers from lowes. Just over 6 bucks.

I personally would suggest ppl to actualyl get pipes bent with tips if you dont' want gains and just want the sound.

1) All the exhausts would go out the back and not have any running around the bottom of your car

2) When you floor it the exhaust sound doens't open up as much as a CBE or muffler delete cause enough gases are going through the muffler.

Hey Chriz! What ctspeed said:

Hey Csquared good points! This is only as a last resort. People should look into getting pipes with tips fabricated. However, living in the middle of nowhere has caused me to do this mod.

I agree that more exhaust does flow through the muffler at higher RPM thus muffling most of the sound, but it still sounds awesome especially 3k+ rpm. This also doesn't attract cops as much.
