People with HFC's: Did you throw a CEL after install

Yes or No

Zsteve 04-23-2010 10:08 PM

erz hfc no cel yet and I out some steel wool in.

efuseakay 04-23-2010 11:12 PM

I did a day after... but it was an installation error... the driver's side o2 wasn't tightened. Took care of that, cleared the code, and now I'm CEL-free.

I have the ERZ HFCs on my 2010 G37xS sedan. :)

semtex 04-23-2010 11:17 PM

Might help if you specify which HFC. Some have extended O2 ports. Some don't. And that might make a difference as far as CELs go.

shumby 04-23-2010 11:32 PM

i had bercs and had a cel from day one. my FI was good for about 5000km then got a CEL. in FI defence he had not shipped out the non foulers with mine and I had them on the shelf when the CEL light came on as of today 40,000 km no CEL.

1slow370 04-24-2010 03:21 AM

i'm not going to vote because i did but only because my friend dropped the left hand sensor and broke the heater element

djpathfinder 04-24-2010 03:57 AM

Zsteve and Efuseakay, do you guys have the extenders on?

efuseakay 04-24-2010 07:08 AM

Yup! Once the o2 was tightened.... No CEL!

CBRich 04-24-2010 07:56 AM

Can the test pipe boys get on? ERZ RTP, no CEL.

I'm going with ERZ's with the extenders, I figure I could get angled defoulers if I need them

Your referring to the shorter one's that are included not the optional angled one's, right?

Without an extender, where can you stuff the steel wool?

Red370 04-24-2010 01:01 PM

I did after I had mine on for a few thousand miles, put it up on a lift, pulled the sensors out, stuffed the bungs with steel wool, light went away and hasnt come back since.

no CEL on your CNT test pipe

Dembflyr 04-27-2010 02:43 AM

No CEL with the Berk HFC's here.

TBSS2008 04-27-2010 08:54 AM

I have the ERZ HFC without the extended fouler and have throw 3 CELS in the past 6000 miles. First was at about 4000 miles, reset ecu. Then two days later another one 4050 miles, reset ecu by Disconnecting Battery. Then today I got another one at about 6000 miles.

I may have a loose 02 sensor or it maybe the lack of the extended fouler not sure, I still have not check the sensor yet. I just got my Cobb AP this Saturday and installed it on the car but no new map STOCK INSTALL. I got the last CEL light with the Cobb AP (Stock Installed). I get the AAM Competition map today and will install it tonight. If I keep having the CEL issue I may do the steel wool trick or just install the extended fouler.

djpathfinder 04-27-2010 09:16 AM

Is the extended fouler the one that's about 1.5 inches and screws onto the HFC?

Yup, working great!

dj, I have the optional 90 degree angled extenders that are several inches long. They work like a charm. :)

djpathfinder 04-27-2010 10:08 AM

I see. I'm having my HFCs installed today with the straight extenders that came with them. Hopefully I won't get the CEL problems.

Steel wool...is that like the material used in scrub pads you use in the kitchen? Can I get steel wool at somewhere like Home Depot? How much do you need and how tight/loosely pack does it have to be?

Z eliminator 04-27-2010 10:20 AM

Berk cats with stillen headers. No CEL's

Well, try first without it. Most likely, you will be ok.

Yeah that's the stuff... you can get it at the hardware store/grocery store etc.

From what I have read, you have to pack it pretty tight, but not so tight where no air can get through.

djpathfinder 04-27-2010 11:05 AM

Really? It's actually the scrub pads? I thought maybe it was sold in a large bundle, like cotton batting. OK, I'll try without first.

efuseakay 04-27-2010 11:31 AM

I'm sure you can find it in big bundles too. But either way should be fine. :)

well why not try with it just to be on the safe side? then you know you wont have to worry about issues down the road. Takes 30 seconds of your time. Pack in just enough so that it gives a slight and i mean SLIGHT resistance to your O2 sensor when you screw it in. Every since i've done it, my SES light hasnt come back on, 4 thousand miles later.

djpathfinder 04-27-2010 01:37 PM

Why not? Because it was installed this morning while I was at work.
:icon17:

evse82 04-27-2010 05:25 PM

I have Berk, I got a CEL but it was caused by temporary gaskets that we put in. Once the real ones went in CEL was gone... so I'm voting no... haha

UFreefer 04-27-2010 06:22 PM

Thanks for all of the responses and feedback everyone! Reassuring as I'm going to install mine this weekend
