Necro thread.

Nick, LTH are not street legal. You will fail any emissions test if you have one. And since LTHs smell like stink, any cop driving behind you is going to know you're not running cats.

I thought the smell is only temporary? I haven't had a chance to drive it much, it's been in a garage for the winter.

On a side note, what is the benefit of LTH over HFC?

The only temporary smell is the oil residue or some muffler packing (on applicable exhausts) burning off. Usually that smell goes away after a day or two of driving.

LTHs, however, delete the cats so you have raw exhaust gasses passing through. That smell never goes away.

Benefit of LTH over HFC... assuming the factory manifolds are restrictive a well designed LTH system will flow better. LTHs increase the length of the primaries and move the collector back quite a bit, which can help with scavenging efficiency.

Ok, if it's too much of a problem I can just remove the Headers and install F.I. HFC. However, I don't want to go this route if I will lose power.

You'll lose a bit of power, but you won't face huge fines either. Ask Red__Zed about his multiple-thousand dollar emissions fine(s) on his old S2000.

Granted that's VA, not MD. But it's all EPA.

I could always do a change of address to a different county in MD. My Civic was registered in a different county about 2 hours away and never had to have emissions done.

That's about all I could do, besides removing them. I don't see any other way around it.

I want to chime in on this! The headers are "technically" For Off Road Use! Now I have plenty of customers (at their own discretion) that run them!

Take California out of this equation for a minute. Every county in every state will have different requirements to pass smog.

Now in MD (if) they do a visual they will look for a cat. (If) they do not see one, you will fail! (If) they use a sniffer, you will fail!

However if they are like a lot of places and they just scan for codes, then you will pass.

Now let's go back to the cat thing for a minute. We now have the ability to add HFC's to the back of the lead pipes right in front of the X Pipe. You can go with our 300 cell metallic cats or our 100 cell metallic cats. This option will completely eliminate your "raw fuel gas smell" out of the rear! By adding a cat to the equation you should be able to pass the visual inspection, as long as they do not require a cat in stock location!

As far as the sniffer test, there is no guarantee until you try!

PA only requires smog testing in certain counties. I live in Montour county and we don't have emission testing.

Florida is closer buddy. They might be legally blind with a driver license but at least they also get a handicap sticker so they can park real close and not get lost walking into the Wal-Mart.

I have a few relatives that you could use this mod and I'm not talking about their cars.

in virginia, i got pulled over for an axleback on my old car (a lancer) and my friend got pulled over for his exhaust on his mustang. his has hfc and an an axleback. this was all within the last year too...

it all boils down to controlling society. Just another bunch of elitists wanting to tell you how to live your life. About 20 years ago, I read about a guy who wanted to mod an 88 Monte Carlo........427 big block w/ fuel injection. The car made over 600 hp and passed EVERY emissions test his state threw at it. (better than the stock configuration) Idle, load etc. It wasn't street legal because he altered the FACTORY configuration. Think about it. If you can make your car run CLEANER than factory but some titturd says you are illegal because of the parts you used.....it AIN'T about emissions....it's about you didn't follow my rules. Do the install but keep the factory cats in the shed. If you fail the visual you can swap the parts out and retest.

BTW, all standards are based on C.A.R.B. (California Air Research Board testing) First off, why the hell is the rest of the country following Californias standards. Secondly, I GUARANTEE you their standards are fraudulent (elitist, environmental mentality) as you can determine by doing a little research on "man caused global climate change". FALSE information used to justify control and limitless government funding. As with the labor unions, the initial ideas were right and just, then they became aware of the power and control aspects....and that cronies in government (ala Barbra Boxer and Nancy Pelosi) would divert tens of millions of dollars to the research facility that produced "results" that supported their agenda. When I was still living in VA I had to take mine in for the annual inspection and I passed with no problems. I really think it depends on where you take it. When I moved to Maryland that presented a whole new set of challenges!

Every state and even individual cities are different in how they enforce rules. I know chicago enforces rules more strictly for everything than all the towns around it. They even created a "home rule" which lets them claim something is illegal even if state made it legal...bs i know but its all about $.

Best advice is to just hold on to your stock parts so that if you need to do a quick swap and pass the tests/get rid of the tickets.
