I know I should of looked around but too many results and too little time made me post this topic.

What IS the purpose of a custom intake?

And how does it improve anything compared to the stock intake.

I AM a huge noob towards cars so yeah I am pathetic :roflpuke2:.

It helps clean the smog out of the air. Cleaner the air, the more efficient the burn in the combustion chamber. That helps create more power. Very significant in California, but gains arent as noticeable in, say, Hawaii.

What would be one of the best picks because I often see people advising stillen.

Stillen or injen's, Stillen's make a little more Hp and cost more. The install requires the front bumper to be removed and minor cutting of where the old air boxes were.
The Injen's can be installed either removing the front bumper or just removing the front tires to get to the wheel liners, so the wheel liners can be moved out of the way.. There's diy on both in the diy section.

Imagine that your engine is an air pump. It sucks air in and exhausts it thru the exhaust. The less restriction that it has on both sides - intake and exhaust - the more horespower it is capable of making. Your ECU will adjust to the amount of air entering the intake (up to a point) and add more fuel to match the corresponding air that a new intake will deliver. The stock system is pretty good in that our Z's make pretty good power from the factory, but it could be better, hence the aftermarket systems.

The other issue is the temperature of the intake air. Cold air is more dense than warm air, so the colder the charge the more your ECU can do to increase the horsepower. Of course, there is a point where the system cannot do more than it is programmed to do. I think you will find that the most that the best intake out there can do for you would be about 15-18 horsepower. An less restrictive exhaust will add more as well. Then you can look at high flow cats and such. Good luck with your search for the perfect intake.

Many dealerships will not install aftermarket, non-nismo parts on our car. Talk to your dealership's service techs, the actual guys that would be working on the car, and see what they say. Just ask general questions, not specific install-specific questions. You don't want to raise a red flag.

For instance, if my dealership was asked to install a CAI on my car, they'd refuse and then absolutely everything that went wrong on the car would be blamed on the intake.

Best bet is to find a trusted mechanic nearby. Good luck!

Everyone starts somewhere - do you want to be a noob forever, or would you rather fork over $100-200 in labor when you could easily follow many of the picture-filled and well-written DIY's on this site?

The best way I learned was simply diving in.

Filtration is definitely important.. but I'm not sure I'd bring smog into the equation.. gains in a clean environment with say the STILLEN Gen 3 are just as effective in cleaner environments..

Air pump example is always effective.. dense air in.. explosion.. exhaust gases out.. the faster and more efficient.. the more horsepower.. simple premise..

I think you'll find with research that's not the case, and increasingly more so, at least with STILLEN products. We have a fantastic relationship with Nissan and it's dealerships, and are common installs on most dealerships across the country.

I would be disheartened if the attitude of my local dealership was the norm, however, I must live with the fact that they are total douches. Luckily, I have a fantastic local repair/custom exhaust shop nearby that does all my installs (and are fans of Stillen products!).

they don't make problems of tuning products. i mean the boss of the dealership owns a TT 350Z and pretty much every Z car.

they also installed a akrapovic exhaust on the GT-R

they are good people

You wont mess it up - dont you have a car friend or anything? Someone who can be a 2nd set of eyes to watch over you? Thats the best way to learn...
