Gauging Interest - CAI Extension

Hey All,

So i have Stillen Gen 3's as many of us do. They hide behind the bumper cover, but still get decent cool air. From what i've seen there are a few options for improving access to air... new bumper cover with cutouts, dewla dezign scoop, or home made air ducting to name a few.

I have been designing a pipe extension and will have my prototypes tomorrow and will provide pictures here. Basically they will slide into the end of the stillen CAI and extend to put the filters in the grill area. I plan to do before and after testing with different driving conditions for temp measuring. I know there's been testing done with the other options so i am hopeful this will provide cooler air.

I'm posting here to see if this is something the Z community would be interested in as a product "if" it works (not that i doubt it will). Not sure how much the bumper cutouts cost, dewla dezign is $200 US, and air are cheap but don't look the best IMO.

Let me know what you all think! Again, i will be posting pics tomorrow of my prototypes on the car and testing results will come later. Thanks in advance!

Are you at all concerned about further lowering the location of the filters and exposing them to rain and or high water? Hydro lock is something most of us are concerned with when it comes to these systems and the position of the filters.

A fair question! Yes, obviously a concern. Once testing to validate cooling performance is completed, this will be tested as well.

I researched all of the options for this over a year ago and decided to go with the Dewla Dezign Air Guide. I'm always looking to improve performance and squeeze every last HP out of my Z, so I'm interested in seeing the prototypes as well as the test results.

If this turns out to be a better option, any idea what the cost will be for those of us that are interested?

Didnt someone try a bumper duct/cutout near the filters and learn that it wasnt wffective due to the turbulence causes by the positioning?

Always wondered whether the bumper intake duct was effective

There may be a secondary benefit in cooling tho

Now that you mention it, I recall hearing something about that. If I had to guess, maybe it was ModShack who stated that. I'm not sure if he's even on here any more.

Modshack hasn't been around for years. His last post was in 2013 and last log in was 2016.

All good points! I didn't research much into the cutouts, just knew they were an option. I don't personally want to cut if i don't have to, or buy a whole new bumper cover (although i do like the aesthetic)

As for cost, this is VERRRY early stage of my development. The largest "Subject to Change" sticker is on this reply. That being said, i want to shoot for ~ $50 for a set of these extensions shipped.

I'm personally curious to see if the cooling gains would be significant. I'm running Z1 intakes with DEI goldwrap and my AIT is rock steady at 7*F above outside temp, so long as the car is moving.

Hey All!

So i have tested the initial prototypes now and i have to say some good success! First we will start with some pics of course!

As for mods that i have. Fast intentions CBE, Berk HFC, Stillen Gen3, Swift springs, Tune from PTuning in Manasas VA. So far i've done through town driving capping at 30mph for 10 mins, a 20 mile highway drive at 77mph, and just idling for 25 mins. AIT temp readings were from Ecutek software and ambient readings were from cars sensor (i don't have oil cooler so temps should be accurate)

Idle Test - Ambient 80F. AIT 123.8 (43.8F above ambient). No one was expecting any gains here as we are setting still but i wanted to add the info i got.

Town Driving - Done right after idle test. 76F ambient. Once driving, AIT temps read 80.6F so +4.6 over ambient at 30mph.

Highway 20 mile - 70F ambient. 73.4 AIT! only +3.4 above ambient. Casual driving at 77mph with one stop. Drive was in morning from cold start.

So far i am quite pleased with the results. I still have more driving style tests to do as well as putting back on the "stock" gen 3's to run same tests there. Let me know what you all think and look for more to come!

EDIT - Thanks JAR, resizing still didnt work but i just uploaded to forum and that seems to be flawless!

Hey all,

Just wanted to update i'm still working on this project. Been doing daily logging of temps and creating my next prototype. As a recap, with my gen1 prototype, we are looking at 3.5-5.5F above ambient temps so far with casual driving. Still have to do the water safety testing and more rigorous driving temp testing.
