Z1 CAI Filtration Capability

I’ve done a quite a bit of research on intakes through the forums. Of all the CAI intake options( Gen 3’s,AAM,Takeda,Admin,etc.) I think Z1 offers the best combination of long tube design, fitment, and ac line protection. But my question is this: Z1 has its own in house filters vs other companies that use K&N or AEM. Is there any data on the filtration capability of Z1 filters? I don’t want to let extra dirt/contaminants into the motor.

I would just go with Gen 3s, but placing the weight of metal piping on my ac lines during hard accelerations (even with wrapped ac lines) makes me a bit nervous.

Unsure; how I’ve ran the base kit & then the upgrade race version...they appear to mirror AFR Pro5r version.

Unsure the micron rating; as I ran the larger diameter filters more miles than the base...never noticed any residual dust/dirt on inside of piping or maf’s :ugh2:

Yes to my knowledge there is no micron data or I do not know of anyone that has tested the air filters Z1 uses on their Z1 Motorsports full length CAI. I do know from previous Z enthusiasts that have purchased the Z1 Motorsports full length CAI that Z1 claims that the air filters they use are their own and they manufacture them and I don’t know the filtration rating comparing to other brand air filters like K&N,AEM,Green air filters etc. You can do your own testing though. I do know depending on how is installing the Z1 Motorsports CAI full length CAI or the Stillen Gen 3 full length CAI the silicone coupler can possibly rub against the air condition lines but I have never seen the actual metal tubing rub against or hit the air condition lines though. Both the Z1 Motorsports and Stillen Gen 3 CAI’s have both been proven to make whp and wtq over the stock genuine Nissan plastic air boxes. The only air filters I have ever see that showed any micron data for their brand air filters were K&N air filters and Green air filters. If you install any full length cold air induction kit that is out of the engine bay your air filters will get dirty faster. I do know the Z1 Motorsports and Stillen both highly recommend replacing or cleaning their air filters for their full length and short ram intakes at least once a per year.

Here’s the way mine looked installed

Do you think you noticed a benefit from the “race” modified intakes? Been thinking about this, but hate to drop money just modifying the crash bar.

Yes & had a buddy who welds good (0-charge) so just the extra for velocity stacks, adapters & piping/clamps...I went from 309-314whp with UpRev tune.velocity stacks are cast aluminum & weigh a bit, so I made a bracket that sandwiches between the adapter & stack....then used a bolt/locknut to hold in place-preventing them from drooping down & just resting on crash bar.
All foam stays in place & keeps filters in that high pressure location.
A few people have opted for Fast Intentions crash bar instead. The air guide tray is something that I made to guide air through radiator & up to filters.
Hope this helps; as I didn’t just throw together,,,took extra time to ensure everything held secure & functional.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Lack of micron data on the Z1 filters removes them from contention for me.

Back to the drawing board for now. Has anyone successfully installed Stillen g3’s without them touching the ac lines at all? The Takeda longtube could be a good substitute. Has soft elbows over the ac lines and Afe dry filters have great filtration reviews across the interwebs.

I do find the design of these filters impressive. The gains to be had from just a filter design or intriguing and show how much goes into the design of an intake that we hardly consider as consumers. A part of me wonder again with these race intakes though, is there less filtration resulting in more air intake?

Base is 6” diameter; very well made filters

Also; I failed to mention that I also periodically had oil analysis from Blackstone Labs....no issues :ugh2:
Your money-the mafs are located in the same location as where the oem ones are,,,didn’t throw a cel on my Z...but had it tuned within 1k miles afterwards.

TorqueSteer 02-18-2019 11:09 AM

Excellent point about the oil analysis. I’m glad to hear that your results came back positive. I ultimately decided to go with the takeda afe long tubes. They offer a good blend of all the things I’m personally looking for in an intake and I was able to get them a little cheaper than the other CAI options out there right now.

R2C filters are just about the best out there :twocents:
