Tanabe Medalion Touring Axle-Back Exhaust (T70132A) for G37 - installed on Z
Hi, I want to share my thoughts on the Tanabe Medalion Touring Axle-Back Exhaust (T70132A) for the Infiniti G37. I installed this on my 09 Z. I literally had this installed just a few hours ago so my opinions may change:
1) Direct fit. No issues. I'm not sure why they don't label this as compatible on the Z or why you don't see more videos and references about this setup from Z guys. 2) This $600-$800 exhaust (new) can be had for $300 used. That's what I paid. Great deals out there on this setup. 3) As you can see in the photos, the tips sit very nicely. They do stick out more than the OEM, but it doesn't look as out of place as I thought they would. How they compare: The OEM muffler has an understated but classy sound. It doesn't scream "HEAR ME". But it also doesn't convey "TRY ME" like the Tanabes. OEM is too conservative for a car with a SPORT package which is why I decided to install something else. Cold starts are humble and non disruptive. The tone quiets down quickly and once your idling at warm temps, it sounds like any eco commuter at red lights in my opinion. But it's the best setup for daily driver + sensitive neighbor situations. It's the ideal compromise. It's as stealth as you can be while getting some satisfying sounds when your on the track or carving curves down the highway. Tanabe, It's deep. Burly. Cold starts will remind you that you no longer have the muffler installed. After 3k RPM it is similar in crispness to the OEM but much deeper, and maybe 30% louder. Where this doesn't impress me is around 1500 RPM, it sounds less focused. I like to hear individual cylinders fire off and it's hard to hear that DAT DAT DAT sound after coming from a red light like I do with the OEM. Idle sound is actually close to OEM. I think that's a positive given how loud it is in every other range. So if you are coasting into your garage at 2am, having STEALTH MODE is nice. Now, would I buy them new? No. That's mostly because I'd consider a cat back system at the new price. Anyway, sound is all subjective. The info and videos I saw and read about these Tanabes didn't really match what I experienced first hand. So don't put too much weight with what is online regarding this setup. I mainly made this post so you can SEE what the Tanabes look like on a Z. I plan to keep the OEM muffler and to run the Tanabes for a while and see if my opinion changes. In summary, for $300 (used) this is a great setup and easy recommendation over OEM - offering increased air flow, loudness, and weight saving benefits. UPDATE - 10/28/18: It's 3 weeks and 1500 miles later with this setup and I love it. I don't plan to swap it back to OEM nor to something louder. These Tanabes are as loud as I want to go. I drive with the windows down more often than I used to so I could hear the cans. Last edited by Bay Area Z; 10-28-2018 at 04:47 PM. |
