Muffler-Delete / straight pipe or glasspacks?
Sorry if you wanted me to get straight to the point, but I'm new, pashionate about my Z, and want to ask and receive proper answers.
So I just recently bought a clean, prestine 2014 370z with 11k miles on it (my 1st Z). The car pulls hard at higher rpms and sounds good doing it! I absolutely love this car! Gapped a few 5.0's in the short time of owning it (bad driver mod on them gt's?) All the time spent grinding and saving up has definitely payed off! However, the car isn't perfect, not just yet... not how I'd like it to be for starters, realistically of course. The car just sounds far too tamed for my taste. I plan to eventually refinance this car after a year or two, so I can get my monthly payments down to a level where I can save up more monet, and actually spend cash on high quality aftermarket parts. But within a year or two, I'm pretty much gonna run stock except for small aesthetic installs and I'm gonna be a bit cheap for the time being... which leads to my question: Basic muffler delete and straight pipes, or replace muffler with glasspacks? Let me explain why I ask about the glasspacks. I don't have any issues with my 370z, I love it the way it is, but I want to wake it up, go from tamed to untamed in terms to sound. So far, my research on previous owners doing muffler deletes and straight pipes led to a very "woke" Z! I love the sound, and think it will fit in nicely for a cheap price, in comparison to a GThaus system I eventually want to shoot for once I refinance the car. That being said, muffler deletes are illegal in Texas, and although not an enforced law in the parts I roam in (unless you're way over 95dB), the yearly inspection part is what I'm worried about. Sure, it would seem like most people get away with it, or perhaps they didn't and swapped back and forth before and after the inspection... but it's still a risk and a hassle if I gotta swap constantly. Glasspacks isn't exactly a big topic I can find on older threads when a 370z is involved. But considering that they basically act like a muffler delete, yet still legally is a muffler nonetheless, I would essentially be safe when going in for inspections and still have a nice sounding 370z (especially when the glasspack breaks in). However, I can't find much information about people using glasspacks on 370z's (most info is about 350z's and still limited), and if so, it's hardly enough to either convince me or make me avoid going for glasspacks. So I ask all of you who'd like to help, should I go for the muffler delete and straight pipes? Why or why not? Or should I go for glasspacks? Why or why not? Please don't tell me to go for an actual expensive (or confident) exhaust setup... I plan on doing so already, just not this instant or year. Thanks, -DeadBread Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk |

No one uses glass packs on the Z. Save your money and get the exhaust you want later on.
Or you could do the washer mod. If you do this. You just hung yourself.

Coming up on my third year in Austin and can tell you that I have had no problems here with muffler delete, 2.5 inch aftermarket exhaust and my HFCs. (Still very, very loud.)
Also pass inspection without issue. They don't do a sniffer test here just make sure you don't throw codes or clear them before inspection. Per everyone else's comments No to glass packs and consider HFC vs straight pipe if you are in a county that might be stricter on emissions. |

Hey, doesn't hurt to ask... but care to explain as to why? I understand glasspacks spark a lot of drama for a book-full of reasons, but in terms to sound, they do a heck of a job on muscled v8's... would this "job" translate to a VQ v6?

This car has been around for nearly a decade. It's best to take advice from the members here as we've heard good, bad, ugly, loud, quiet, and everything in between. If there's an exhaust that usually sounds good on a V8 (magnaflow, borla) it usually sounds terrible on this platform. Cherrybombs and glasspacks also fit that category. You can buy resonated muffler deletes and get what you want.

Shame that everyone poopoo'd your idea, but you are not wrong for asking. To be fair the technique is still widely used on race cars with temporary sound restrictions.
A company called burns stainless offers this solution in various sizes. Most tubi exhaust now usually use stainless wool or scrubs over glassmat, but you can still use glassmat as it is slightly cheaper but wears out quicker. For long term use, you should go with steel scrub. Burns stainless offers both in a quick access 2 piece mufflers for replacements of burnt out fillers. https://www.burnsstainless.com/ultra-lightmufflers.aspx These mufflers are high quality and not crap like the stuff you find on Jegs and other wholesale sites. If you want a custom tubi exhaust, this is the company to go to. The design has gotten a pretty bad reputation by cheap crappy designs, but major racing teams still use packed mufflers for tracks with sound restrictions. please note- for a larger pitch reduction, you need a larger width outer tube. This is the primary flaw of most of the crap off the shelf designs. Steel scrubs will give you a more raspier tone over glassmat, but work a lot better with increased heat and last longer. My Buddy has a G35 headers straight pipe exhaust and that thing is so raunchy he considering getting some glass packs installed midway to take the note down a bit. (Used as resonators) really I don't see the stink about using them on our platform...
I have some top speed mufflers and there essentially the same thing. Straight through exhaust with baffles on the outter most sides... Anyways just my 2ć carry on. |

You shouldn't have any trouble finding a shop in the Houston area that will pass you on inspection without mufflers. There are plenty that will pass cars with no catalytic converters.
