AAM Short Tails Illegal in Texas?

My car just failed inspection cause of my short tails. Inspector said its because it doesnt have a muffler. Anyone else deal with this before in Texas?

Google is your friend...

"Texas state inspectors inspect the exhaust system for holes, leaking seams, or patches on the muffler, resonators, exhaust pipe, tailpipe, or catalytic converter. 2. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with muffler in good working order and in constant operation."

What? I'm here in San Antonio for the last 5 years I've had catless exhaust systems. Noone has gave me trouble.

They probably didn't see that you had no cats... no muffler is obvious. Also, it depends who is inspecting it too.

I passed last year and this year i took it to the same place and my car failed. I have cats, he specifically said it was because my car doesnt have a muffler. Now from what i hear to is since i failed i cant take it anywhere else i have to take it back to the same place to get reinspected.

Different person doing the inspection? Just slap on a muffler... end of story.

That's your first mistake. Don't go to regular inspection places. You need either a younger guy who thinks the car is cool and will ignore the visual part, or an old guy who just doesn't care anymore. You can also get good results by going to inspection places in the hood.
CCastro, axmea? and shirokenkami like this.

Yea i learned that the hard way today. From talking to a couple of buddies of mine apparently since he logged in the system officially as a fail i have to take it back to the same place now to get reinspected. The small mom and pop shops wont just pass me now since its in as a fail already.

I'm so glad where I'm at here in TN that inspections, safety or smog, are nonexistent.

You still have the stock muffler? It'd probably be easiest to just throw that back on to pass and then take it off the next day.

I am pretty sure a muffler has nothing to do with emissions, it only controls sound from what I understand. You are going to have the same percentage of carbon coming out of your exhaust as if you had a muffler so I dont get the problem. Correct me if im wrong...
