modify OEM exhaust

Has anyone tried to take the honeycomb out of the exhaust or put bigger tailpipes (AAM) on OEM? I have heard of the washer trick(no thanks). Just changed out the HFC and the noise improved above 3000rpm. Would changing from Y to H pipe be worth more noise and HP? Maybe thicker mid piping? Anybody tried some these mods with the OEM or is it just junk. Just asking:hello:

Most restrictive parts of the exhaust:
#1 Cat
#2 Y-pip
#3 Muffler

OEM is almost junk, if you can grab a used nismo exhaust locally for a hundred that might be worth it but not really.

Nismo exhaust is only worth it if you DIY to save every penny.

Since my car is a daily and I live in CA, I did get the newer version to live on the safe side. It was either that or the Stillen that hangs low and costs more (despite potential gains). I've read some people claim it gets quiet near idle, and that was the case for me also, but I also had a Ecutek tune in play dedicated to the setup before the swap. Re-tune has it sounding better. Net gains over before I did the swap are kinda felt, but it's nothing amazing. I just did it because I'm trying to go as far as I can within my own bounds.

Mods otherwise are kinda wasteful and/or ghetto. Just put the money to a proper system. End of the day that's going to be what you wish you did if you tried to shortcut somewhere.

I was going to post up a similar question soon so this thread has good timing.

I am the very proud owner of a new MY17 Nismo. The car is great (incredible) but the exhaust leaves a little to be desired, especially coming from my '09 370 with ARK Grip system.

This weekend I installed the ART Test Pipes and sound is improving. The car only covered around 230 miles, so would I be right in saying that once the current Nismo system has had chance to bed in it will sound better?

I don't really want to remove the Nismo system as it all adds to the charm of the car. But I could do with some more noise. So I had thought about getting a different Y pipe, but leaving the Nismo muffler on? Anyone achieved similar?

The nismo has larger H pipe mid assembly and will get you some gains over the standard Y pipe.

As far as sound goes, the muffler is really quiet, nismo or standard

The Nismo exhaust is outstanding for a cheap power upgrade. Add short tails or an axleback and you'll get 90% of the power as a dual 2.5 cat back. Nismo exhausts average 3-400, not $100. It's worth it for that price. You can buy a knockoff exhaust, but at least you know it's oem quality
