You'll be fine with those mods without a tune. I've been running a F.I. cat-back and K&N drop-ins for almost 2 years now and no issues.

Rule-of-thumb is: intake mods only or exhaust mods only - no tune needed (ECU will adjust). Intake mods + exhaust mods - tune needed. YMMV

mods for 2013Z - 14,000 miles - coupe gun metal grey
I have only put Invidia Gemini catback exhaust and drop in K & N.
So looks like I am good until I do my HFC berk's.. then will need a tune it sounds like- any idea what a tune should cost with just those mods? what tune should need? Thanks Last edited by Otis; 09-16-2016 at 11:16 AM. |

I recently researched this topic myself because I just had the Invidia CBE installed last week and I have the Stillen Gen3 CAI going in next week. From what I have read, the overwhelming consensus is that no tune is needed with just these 2 mods. My car is running excellent since the Invidia was done last week so I know for a fact no issues there. Now once you decide to do the HFC's or Test Pipes along with the new exhaust and CAI then a tune will be needed. 2 bolt on mods will not require a tune. Of course getting one would be great but it is not necessary. I've spent hours researching other threads on this forum and other sites so take that for what it is worth.

I ran FI catback exhaust and FI HFCs, along with a Stillen Gen 3 CAI without a tune on my daily driver for a year, no issues. I got an ECUTek tune because I wanted the racerom features and to be able to say I'm over 310whp, really no other reason.
I know everyone *says* you need a tune with three breather mods, but no one ever says *why*. From my anecdotal experience, I say don't stress about the tune. Get it when you want it, if you want it.

Yes hours can be spent on these cars, but that is the cheap part - LOL I like the honest replies and i also have had no issues with I.G. exhaust, no tune .. 1,000 miles plus on this set up again thanks |

A tune is totally worth it. It will help you maximize the performance of your bolt-ons as well as get rid of that shitty stock tune throttle lag. A tune can also add features like launch control and such.
It may not be absolutely necessary after installing exhaust and/or intakes. But there are benefits for sure.

In terms of dollars spent for performance gained I think the tune should be the first thing added.
I got an Ecutek etune for my stock 2013 Z 7AT. That by it self increased power and fixed the throttle response issue. Then I installed the following one and time and noted a performance gain with each addition. HR upper intake plenum (M370) Turbo XS cbe FI Rhfc I have data logged after each mod and found that the afr's are still right on the original tune.

I may be technically incorrect but this was my experience...I bought drop in K & N filters first then a nice catback exhaust. It felt like I lost TONS of torque when I added the exhaust. Put paper filters back in, torque improved significantly. IDK but the K&N plus exhaust felt far worse than stock.

I noticed things like fixed throttle lag, and a slight improvement in mpg. The racerom features; launch control, FF shifting, and Valet mode are almost worth it alone. I have the dyno sheets to prove a 22 whp gain, however the butt dyno can't tell the difference. I suspect where you get it tuned probably makes a difference in how well your mods get maximized.

Sounds like I should bite the bullet and get ready to drop another $500 for a tune! Super, just when I was also planning on dropping $1500 on some Michelin PSS steamrollers! Wife will be thrilled! Last edited by bbermann; 09-18-2016 at 04:12 PM. |
