Which magnaflow exhaust do I have?
Hi, upon purchasing my Z, it had came with an aftermarket exhaust already installed.
Tips say magnaflow, though even after searching for a magnaflow exhaust for an 09 Z, non of them come up to how mine looks. I would like to say it could be a cheap exhaust with magnaflow tips clamped on? Each axleback has its own piping as well as its own resonator...upon searching for magnaflows, all i could find is that it has a huge resonator before splitting. Sound wise.. Its not obnoxiously loud, it does have a deep bass(?) tone to it. Medium drone cruising 70-80. I kind of like it, but currently looking at AAM's short tails (exhaust delete) to add a little more growl/purr to it. Would love to get the 350/g35 coupe sound at idle though.. Magnaflow stamps their logo into the mufflers, so I'm going to have to believe somebody was posing.
Could be custom, but I kind of doubt it. Link to some of their race mufflers: Race Mufflers Products

Based on the pictures shared I would say its a custom exhaust with MF tips. Do you know if it is a full cat-back and true-dual vs. X/H/Y crossover?
If you want the short tails, you'll have to source an OEM exhaust (Y and mid pipes) or pick up the AAM mid-pipe because the short tails are designed to work with the stock axle-back location. If you just want louder, you could easily have the rear muffler sections replaced with straight pipes or 12" resonators for cheap by a local exhaust shop. I would guess the pipe diameter is going to be 2.5"

Pipe diameter does look like 2.5.. But am i measuring where the MF tips are clamped on (not the actual tips itself)
Looking under it looks like stock y pipe, but as for midpipe it looks more aftermarket due to the color (goldish). Midpipe also looks like an H pipe (separated after the y pipe, and is separate piping all the way back) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If there are welds on the straight section of piping after the factory Y splits back apart then yes that is where the custom system starts. Also you were correct to measure the piping, tips are only a cosmetic thing.

Thank you for the explanation. will try and get a picture when I do an oil change.. Would the AAM short tails fit these custom pipes; i am pretty sure it is 2.5" piping. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

No, the short tails are meant to work with the factory 2 bolt midpipe-axleback flanges. The only reason they are even remotely considered a good option is because of the ease of install on stock or stock-location exhausts, otherwise $400+ for a muffler delete is ridiculous.
A local exhaust shop would be able to remove your mufflers without a problem. They will likely have tips you could choose from as well if you don't want to keep the Magnaflow ones. However with the stock resonators likely removed by the custom exhaust I will warn that removing the muffler will likely mean it will sound more loud than clean. I highly recommend sourcing some 12" long 2.5" diameter bottle resonators to replace the mufflers if you want more volume/grumble.

That's a full cat-back exhaust with an H-pipe (see how the pipes are connected by a horizontal segment) that has resonators already equipped (the slim muffler looking pieces after the H crossover). This is way more complete than was made out to be initially, but as I already mentioned, the AAM short tails will be a waste of money because this system doesn't take the same path as the factory exhaust. You're best bet if you just want louder is any of these:
1) trade for stock cat-back + cash and use the extra money to buy short tails 2) sell system and buy a different, louder one (tomei, fast intentions non-res) 3) go to local muffler shop and have the mufflers removed The first option will mean a loss of power, the second option is the most expensive but most complete, the third option will be the easiest but you risk not liking the sound the custom system makes without the mufflers. Hope this helps clear things up.
