Exhaust flange gasket material importance?
Hey All,
Just picked up a used CBE. I need to buy two 2.5" gaskets for mating the Y pipe to the cats. Can I just use the FelPro stuff from AutoZone, or do I really need to go with the elastomer coated graphite (Vibrant, Z1)? I just want to try to install this weekend and don't wanna wait for shipping. Thanks |
might try a performance/speed shop

Red RTV will work just fine.

Just rtv is fine.

Any decent brand of exhaust gaskets should work well. Don't get the cheapest ones, but there's no need to spend $$$ for them, either. Just make sure the inside of the gasket fits so that it is flush with the ID of the pipe.
I'm not a big fan of Chuck33079's "RTV only" method but have used it in "emergency" situations. A little RTV will help hold the gasket in place during installation. |
If you're going to use a gasket, get that copper gasket spray and hose down both sides of the gasket. That stuff is great.

I went to autozone and was able to find a felpro gasket (looks like graphite mix) with a fire ring that fits almost perfectly (by like a quarter inch, will make one of mounting holes larger to compensate). I'm prob gonna use these with rtv applied on both sides. It's going from the stock cats (2.25) to the y pipes (2.5)
