Part Combination Needing a Tune Immediately? Knowledge of when Z's run lean/rich?
Hello,
I am going to be picking up used Z1 intake plenum and used K&N typhoon intakes tomorrow for a really good price. (I woulda preferred Stillen Gen 3's cause they are actual Cold Air Intakes, but for the price, I'm paying less than a barely used Z1 plenum and no shipping and no removing the core of mine to ship out.) If I was to install them, I would have Berk HFC's, the intake plenum and the Typhoon intake, stock cat back exhaust and stock headers. I have seen some people saying that their cars run a little lean on this setup without a tune. I understand that getting a tune is necessary to getting the full potential out of any bolt on. I just want to know if I will be putting my engine in danger by bolting these on before I am able to get a tune. Thank you for any input you can provide. I did do a search but I found similar combinations and mixed comments on needing a tune or not. and then I found a bunch of people arguing about the effectiveness of individual parts because including so many part titles returned lots of results. Thanks again, KBC |
You'll be just fine, the ecu will adjust to compensate for intake exhaust changes.
Tunes are recommended for when you want make sure you get the most out of the installed mods. |
With the fast intentions exhaust and stillen gen3 intake my car was still running pretty rich. I recently installed a set of fast intentions test pipes and dynoed my car afterwards. The A/F ratios were still spot on. If you'd like I can post the dyno chart. I honestly wouldn't worry about it at all.

Thank you gentlemen!

Mike here from Texas. Love to hear about your Gen 3 induction and Fast Intentions exhaust. I have 2013 Nismo that I track about once a month. It sounds like. Vacuum cleaner at speed. I talked to Kevon at Fast Intentiosm today and he sort of guided me to the high flow cat back non resonated and the 12" resonated x pipe set up. Told me the spied would improve at higher rpms and maybe a 24 hp gain.m I'm also looking at the Stillen gen 3 induction. Unfortunately Stillen couldn't answer my question about fit with my 34 row oil cooler in front of the radiator. I also understand I should get a tune to really dial in the new induction and exhaust system. Up Rev is in Austin. About 3+ hours for me. Appreciate anything you can share. Thanks

34 row Fast Intentions oil cooler kit is all you need and no issues or other parts needed. Piece of cake. You don't remove the body damper, just flip it and space it.

This is a comparison between a run with just the intake and exhaust with stock cars vs a run after addin in the test pipes. Of course A/f ratio is at the bottom. So while it leaned the car out a bit it's still running at a good A/F ratio. |
Of course I realize it would be best to have a tune and I'm actually installing my Z1 ported plenum and lower intake manifold tomorrow. Once those parts are on I'll be scheduling time for a tune.

Z1 recommends a tune after installing the intake plenum. Most posters have installed an exhaust/intake, plenum has been proven to alter A/F ratios a bit.

Would you clarify a little?
I have ordered FI CatBack and debating on just doing the Stillen g3 CAI at the same time. I do NOT need a tune to get most of the performnace gains. Correct? But a tune would add those few extra HP? Correct? |
Intake + Exhaust = Tune not required, maybe recommended
Intake + HFC + Exhaust = Tune recommended Intake + Test Pipes + Exhaust = Tune strongly recommended I have CAI/HFC/E and OEM tune. Every 500 miles or so I get some rear O2 (cat) codes, but that was only after I installed the HFC. Nissan changed the AF strategy in the 2013+ cars so they're more susceptible to SES lights than the prior models. When I monitor AF using torque, it's running rich if anything... Talking 4th gear pulls from 30MPH to ~110. |
