Default Check engine light after Fast Intentions TP install

Good morning everyone,

Just got my car back last night from getting the FI non-resonated TPs installed. Everything was done by-the-book, all hangers, and bolts in place. Immediately after finishing the car through a "bank 1 sensor 1" code (which to my understanding is the upstream sensor on the header/passenger side). I'm not sure why that sensor would throw a code but we erased it 4 times and it keeps coming back immediately.

Is this related to the test pipes or did my sensor coincidentally go bad during install? Maybe it got bumped or the heater went out? Fast Intentions guarantees no engine light with their products...

You must have mis read or been mis informed. As far as i know test pipes will almost always give out a engine light and you will need a tune in order to remove it permanantly. High flow cats is the option that does not throw a engine light but they are more expensive and not as loud as test pipes but they do not emmit that odor.

I went with berk hfc rather than pipes, i did not want the smell lingering around

It's advertised right on their website in product info...

But it's not the downstream sensor throwing the code.

TP or HFC will throw codes for downstream sensors but it should not effect upstream. If it comes back immediately it means most likely theres an open circuit so either the sensor itself or wires got damaged or simply the sensor could be not connected.

It's plugged in and all the wires look fine. Could the sensor just have gone bad?? I have erased the code and it immediately comes back on along with the P0031 sensor heater code.

Also, anyone notice a little more rev hang with test pipes?? Maybe because of less back pressure? When in gear and I lift off the throttle the revs hang way more than before test pipes. Only other thing I can think of is the a/f sensor is causing it. Its really hesitant at low speeds too.

Anywho.. I found an OE Denso upstream a/f sensor on Amazon for $86+ free shipping. Will install and report back. Hoping the engine light goes away and the car drives normal again.

If its a heater code then you should be fine by replacing the sensor. I imagine who ever installed your test pipes used impact gun. Close enough vibration from the impact gun will damage the sensor! Thats why its not recommended to use impact on any exhaust work. Ask how I know :roll eyes: GL

Unhappy

Chances are that when they removed the old cat's. They used an air impact gun on the bolts. IF they did not remove the the O2 sensors before using the air imact gun. The vibrations from the gun WILL damage the O2 sensors. The first thing you do is to remove the sensors. The last thing you do is install the sensors. So many people here on the forum have run into the same problem with the sensors. Nobody learns.

The Fast Intentions test pipes and high-flow cats have "J-Bend" style thingies where the sensors attach so that they do not cause a check engine light.

I had a friend do it after hours at the performance shop he works at. Not sure what he used but I'm guessing it was impact gun that did it then. I never came across that problem in my reading, otherwise I would have mentioned it to him. Whatevs, $80 part and he's putting it in for free. Live and you learn.

My sensors were also damaged when the TPs were installed. Replaced both sensors on the J bungs and problem solved. Also, my FI TPs always throw SES codes. I stuff steel wool into the bungs and reset the ecu to clear the codes.

Taking her to Uprev this Friday and I understand they can permanently clear the codes. I plan to remove the steel wool from the bungs before I go. We'll see what happens.

Strong misinformation in this thread.

Non-foulers ensure the CEL stays off when going cat-less. If the proper installation procedure is followed.

I have Fast Intentions test pipes on my '09 370z, I have never seen the CEL light come on.

Installation instructions followed to a T by Real Auto Dynamics in Queens. I dont have a pdf to the instructions but I'm sure FI does.

Its not the product, it was your installation.

100%

i have had FI TPs on my car for about 38K miles and 4 years now. never has it once thrown a CEL.

only time I've seen them throw CEL's for others is with incorrect installation that had damaged the O2 sensors.

It's pretty well explained that the CEL is NOT from the test pipes. The a/f sensor was damaged... How is everyone not reading that? Lol

The revs are hanging because of the a/f sensor. Everything will fine when I put the new sensor in.

soooo if it's not the TPs then why say "Fast Intentions guarantees no engine light with their products..." ? lol
