Where Do You Mount Safety Check Stickers?

Howzit Gang, Got a 2013Z on order and don't want the safety check stickers, to be stuck on to the bumper. Where or how do you have them mounted?

Got a G35 Coupe currently and Infiniti in Honolulu puts the safety check on the special bracket below the bumper. Would this work on the Z?

XLR8SN 06-12-2012 12:29 AM

You can buy the under bumper plate mounts from Rons on Nimitz. The one next to the plate is supposedly still "illegal". You might need to get a rivet gun to hold it on. I didnt see a hole under the bumper to mount it to.

Its sorta close to my office...walkable distance. Did you need me to get you one?

Mahalo for the offer. But my car is still about 3 months out, so I'm sure I'll be passing Ron's before then.

The 370Z rear bumper looks like it curves back underneath, do you think it could fit okay there?

Also, is your name on here your license plate too?

XLR8SN 06-12-2012 12:49 PM

I need to poke my head under a normal 370 rear bumper. Since I have the Nismo version and my plate is technically "illegal" my rear end doesnt qualify....LOL. *hint* that answers your last question.

Seriously though, more than likely I can pop my head into the Nissan dealership and take a look. Honestly I havent seen many 370's with that type of mounting plate on the underside location.

Hence that was my worry that you might need a rivet gun. If there was a hole under there you could run some lock nuts and attach the plate there.

The brackets at Rons were located by the cashiers desk area behind of them. That store is pretty sparse since they bring in most of the items versus stocking them. If you know someone that can bend stainless steel straight and evenly, just have one made for yourself. For a little piece of metal...its expensive in my opinion...but I am lazy so I just bought one. :p

We try :tiphat: :hello:. Same as it is in any "smaller town" were everyone knows you. Though since we all live, work and play on the same island...you really ought to try to be nice to everyone. Since I can guarantee that you will meet up with someone that knows you through someone else somewhere. Its the simplest checks and balances of attitudes and egos. :p

Hows Maryland? I really need to travel more.

Not saying there's anything wrong with it, but if you're a guy......your rear end doesn't qualify with me either! :rofl2:

Many mahalo's for your assistance.

I am due for an oil change and other thingies at the dealership, so I will take a look this coming Saturday and get back to you.

Looked at my G35 Coupe bracket install. Infiniti, drills 2 holes thru the bracket and the underneath rubber part of the bumper. Then secures it with screws & locking nuts. I should be able to do this with the Z.

Safety check stickers on chrome bumpers of the past were okay, but no way do I want to screw up the beautifully painted bumper of the 370Z.

definitionxmk 06-14-2012 08:34 PM

I just gave in and got the license plate one =) Hard on safety though...

Sorry I missed this earlier :tiphat:

MD is great thanks, good people and lots to do in this part of the country...if you get here have the crabs, if there is anything not to forget when here its that little gift from the Chesapeake Bay!

XLR8SN 06-15-2012 04:13 AM

Think I will search on things to do in Maryland. Now I am curious.

Made a note to myself to check the Z's on the lot when I go there on Saturday.

XLR8SN 06-16-2012 09:16 PM

Okay....here be my thoughts. I don't think that you will be able to mount a plate under there. The bumper cover doesn't go under enough to give you a good surface to bolt to. There was a pop clip in the middle of the bumper under the euro fog light...but that location is questionable in itself to. Both because the stickers are supposed to be on the right of the plate and I can't say how secure it will be with just one bolt.

So....you might be better off with the mount on the side of the plate...and just make friends with someone to do the safety check for you.

Best of luck, and let me know if you need me to grab a mount for you.

XLR8SN Mahalo for all your assistance.

Wondering how many have the next to the license plate mount out there and any problems with police & safety check issuers?

No prob. Hope that it helps you somewhat.

Quite a bit of people have that side mount. SUV's, other cars, and the such. I dont think that the police really have a big issue as so much as the safety inspection stations. Just need to be really nice to the safety check person. And dont attract too much attention from the cops. :p

Other people are using those mounts so, its not like it is an "underground" kind of a thing. Just need to be smart in regards to your driving and find a really friendly person to do your safety checks.

Magic Bus 06-19-2012 01:37 AM

Did some research on the internet on the location of safety check. What I did find on the topic was, it is to go on the rear bumper on the right side and must be visible from 50 feet away, for the police. Actually having it on the right side of the license plate, actually makes it more visible from 50 feet than the bumper.

On one of my safety check inspections, they wouldn't put it on my bracket below the bumper. But they just peeled a couple of the corners off and placed it lightly on my bumper. That was pretty cool of them.

Yeah...if you are on the level and they are "comfortable" with you, they will help you out. The problem in the past was that when people got pulled for illegal things, they ratted out the safety inspection stations as "well they passed me"...so then the safety inspection stations got their permits pulled when the cops traced it back.

Hence if you are on the level and they are comfortable with you, they will try their best to help you out a little since most of them are car fanatics as well.

Let me know if you need that bracket though. Like I said...its a relatively short walk from work. Its no biggie.

trainsales 06-20-2012 08:28 PM

The Nissan dealer in Hawaii attached one of those metal brackets to the underside of my bumper and placed the safety sticker there. I did not ask for this, but it was already done when I picked up the car. (They also did a window I.D. etching, and installed an electronic rust inhibitor device which I did not request or pay for.)

Can you post a picture on how they attached it? When I looked there was not enough of the bumper I thought to attach anything to in regards to being secure and all.

trainsales 06-21-2012 01:41 PM

2 Attachment(s)
Ok, here it is (if it uploaded properly). And I even stuck my phone under the bumper for a second shot looking up. Two screws attached to a flimsy edge of the plastic bumper. I can wobble the bracket with my hand. A thief could easily tear it off. I rather have it stuck to the bumper where it belongs.

XLR8SN 06-21-2012 04:37 PM

Cool. Thanks, this should help out "Magic Bus" a bit. Though I do agree with you in regards to the mount point. That "lip" was quite small and short so I wondered on how they got it to mount there. The older 350Z bumper cover went pretty far under, so it gave more surface area to mount things to.

Magic Bus 06-21-2012 07:29 PM

Mahalo guys! And Trainsales, big Mahalo for the pics. Car won't be here for 2 months yet, so I still have time to decide. But right now, I still like the bracket.

I'd change the type of screws used to mount it, just to make it a little tougher to steal. But my car will be in my enclosed garage at night and in a pretty secured building parking lot during the day.

I guess my vanity of having a clean bumper is bigger than someone stealing my safety check. LOL

trainsales 06-22-2012 01:10 PM

Actually, theft of the bracket might mitigate worse damage. I know a person who went to a party in waianae and when she got back to her car, there was a big square hole cut out of the bumper where the safety check used to be. amazing.

XLR8SN 06-22-2012 01:32 PM

*sigh* Yeah...people do some weird things just to get something that they want. Make sure that your car insurance is up to date and understand your policies and "limits" as well.

Wow! Actually, I'd rather them steal the bracket or ruin the underside of my bumper then cut a hole in the middle of my bumper.

My G35 bracket is just mounted with 2 screws & lock nuts. Wouldn't take very long to remove. Only $20 to replace a safety check, replacing a bumper $$? Because of your story, at this point, I think I'll go with the bracket and leave simple phillip screws with lock nuts. If someone wants to steal it, I'll make it easy so they don't damage the car.

Magic Bus 08-11-2012 09:02 PM

Howzit Gang, will be picking up my 2013Z GM, 6mt w/spt/pkg sometime this coming week from Tony Nissan. It's at the docks now, but should be at dealership shortly.

Regarding bracket for safety check. Tony Nissan includes this at no charge on a 370Z or GTR (trainsales brought this up earlier). They'll do it on other cars but you gotta bring your own bracket.

XLR8SN 08-12-2012 01:34 AM

Yo...do you need me to check at Ron's for that bracket?

Magic Bus 08-13-2012 02:31 AM

XLR8SN, Much Mahalo's but no need. Tony Nissan does it free for you if you get a 370Z or GTR.

XLR8SN 08-13-2012 02:53 AM

Okay. Didn't know if you wanted the one that goes on the side of the plate versus under the bumper. Think that the one they will mount will be under the bumper..seems to be the normal ones for all of the dealers.

Magic Bus 08-13-2012 08:33 PM

Yup, they'll do under the bumper one. That's the one I want. Thanks again!

Okkie Dokkie then. Glad that they will do it for you. Congrats on getting the first 2013 model in Hawaii. Gun metallic.....crap....I wanted that color but it wasnt available when I got mine. I envy you. :p

Darryl79 08-13-2012 10:47 PM

Damn the luck. I bought my roadster from New City Nissan and they just slapped the sticker on the right part of the bumper. Damn. The sticker is already starting to peal. Is this re-doable to a bracket you think?

Magic Bus 08-14-2012 03:03 AM

Darryl, I think it is. While waiting for service once on my G35, I saw a tech remove a safety check from a painted bumper in one piece with a razor blade. To be on the safe side, I think if you heat it a bit with a hair dryer and slowly and gently use a razor blade you probably could get it off in one piece.

Then you can most likely re-glue it to your new bracket. If you screw up, then you'll just have to pay & get a new safety check. Or wait till you get close to your safety check expiration and then have them put the new one on to your bracket. Oh, just saw that yours is a 12, so you got 2 years, that may be a wait. Good luck to you either way!

LOL..just look for a dirty black Nismo...and that would more than likely be me.

If you are on the leeward side of the islands...I am sure that we are going to cross paths sometime. I see "definition" every once in a while. I never recognize his work vehicle though...only the bright yellow Z. Think that is the only yellow Z on the island too.

Though...I am curious on the front end look of the new 2013. Reminds me of a hint of the older 350 design in there. And you get the oil cooler with the sport package.....right?? If so...then I REEEEAAALLLY envy you.

Magic Bus 08-14-2012 02:59 PM

Used to live in Village Park awhile back but moved to Kaimuki due to traffic. But I still drive to the leeward side to visit clients, so maybe I'll see the black Nismo or yellow Z.

Didn't know the oil cooler was only on the sport/pkg, thought they all got it now. I do know I'm getting the red calipers and euro tuned suspension (whatever that is) LOL!
