I'm still powdercoating, but no longer advertising here, and I may or may not have an exchange program, but not due to demand. I am thinking about getting a 2nd set of calipers for my own track use as the extreme heat and powdercoating don't really mix, but the group buy is no more.

Caravanshaka 08-25-2009 08:51 AM

That sucks to hear Mike...I would have done it if I wasn't planning on setting up a small powdercoating shop in my garage :(

Damn... I don't think I could afford the down time if you didn't have the exchange program. Really puts a damper in my plans :(

bullitt5897 08-27-2009 05:30 PM

Hey Mike can you powder coat the rear hatch bar Pearl white for me? like color matched?

tjlazer 02-07-2010 03:27 PM

Any pics of the Akebono calipers powdercoated with the NISSAN logo?

sorry, noone has ever wanted that.

MightyBobo 02-13-2010 09:08 AM

Im surprised Mike - I figured the powder coating would hold up against heat generated on the track. Or is there special stuff you gotta use in high-temp situations?

Mike 02-13-2010 09:09 AM

well, the real problem is that when it gets hot, it gets soft, so a) it looses its gloss, and b) the brake dust embeds itself in the finish. That is why my calipers are satin black. that color holds up fine.

Roger. Makes sense. Hey, maybe you'll have an idea - so, one of my bleeder valves seeped some fluid out while I was on the track. Disconcerting, and I may take her to the dealership to find out wtf the issue was - I tightened the **** out of it, and it'd still leak a bit.

Anyway, point is, I think it stained the paint - cant seem to get the marks off at all. Figure its burned into the clear and about the only thing to fix it is an aggressive polish?

Mike 02-13-2010 10:33 AM

yea, I don't think you can fix it. Mine weep a little too, leaving ugly streaks on the calipers.

Must just be an issue with people who hit the track. Should ask RCZ if he had issues. It was messy my first time out, thats for sure. Im thinking thats what caused my stability control system to freak.

Mike 02-13-2010 05:09 PM

I can do that

tjlazer 04-11-2010 10:22 AM

Well the reason with Infiniti is they are cheaper, and since they are getting painted.... But I wanted to put the Nissan logo back on them.

w0ady 04-11-2010 11:55 AM

i was just teasing. ive got an infiniti. :)

and I can put whatever logo you want on them, its just a matter of which logo stencil I cut with my vinyl cutter. I am on a 3 month break from new pc business though, as I am severely burned out. W0ady was the first one to get the Akebono logos on his though.

rdavidw 05-26-2010 07:48 AM

Hey Mike,

I want to get my calipers powder coated in red with a slight metallic flake, like the second set down on your 1st post, with the same Akebono logo. Perhaps a little darker, like a candy apple red.

My Z is my 2nd car so I can have the car on jack stands for a little while. Removing and replacing the breaks, however, is a little beyond my comfort level. I suppose I could take it to a shop but then I would have to store the car there until the breaks come back.

Should I just try one of the G2 brake caliper paint kits? If so, is there a way to get a logo on the calipers? If I try that and don’t like it, will it then be more difficult to powered coat them?

Thanks for your help Mike.

David

MightyBobo 05-26-2010 09:58 AM

Ooo, I like that candy apple red for a powdercoat....

Tell me when you're off your brake (see what I did there?) Mike ...

Its fairly easy to remove and store them. I can send you 4 silicone plugs that you put in the brake lines to keep them from leaking while the calipers are off. The only tricky part is bleeding them after reinstalling, and thats not even tricky, just intimidating.

If you do G2, you probably won't be happy with it, especially on a caliper as smooth as these and painting with a brush.

Mightybobo, I am pretty much off of my break. It never really turned out to be a complete break, just a slowdown that I used to train a new employee to help me with the workload.

and by the way, while the group buy never went down, I will do that price for any premium the370z.com member.

Thanks Mike,

Do you sandblast or somehow remove all the old paint before you powder coat? If so, will it be any harder to do that if I try the G2 kit I already bought? I would like to see how the car looks with red calipers. If I don’t like it I can then have you do it back in a more subtle color.

Does the price include adding the Nissan or Akebono logos?

About how long is the turnaround time?

Mike 06-01-2010 04:12 PM

sent you a pm, since I'm not an advertiser here anymore.

Caravanshaka 07-15-2010 11:02 AM

Thanks, Mike, they look great!

Mike 03-15-2011 07:41 AM

right now I have several people waiting from this and the G37 forum, so its a couple months for exchange. if you want to send yours, I can turn them in two days.

abgyak 03-15-2011 10:19 AM

2 days? hmm so a week to send it to u... 2 days to get it powdercoated and another week to send it back to me... wow thats 16 days or nearly 3 weeks without the Z... btw how much does it cost to do all 4 calipers? & is there any option to get new sets of calipers instead of sending mine to you?

Mike 03-15-2011 03:55 PM

I didn't notice your location, I can't do exchange either with that distance. I did send a set of Z06 calipers to Dubai once, and it cost 400 dollars, plus the guy decided to keep them and not send the cores back and I was out of the only set of Z06 calipers I had.

Best bet would be to buy a set from a US vendor, like Z1 or even used and have them shipped directly to me, let me coat them and then send them on to you.

daisuke149 04-23-2011 08:17 PM

BIG PROPS to Mike. I got to put these on today and they look amazing and even better on the car! Thanks to the guys at Z1 for taking very good care in putting them on too. I hounded them kinda making sure no nicks or scratch's etc and they went on perfect!

First pic had the flash on : ) looked kinda cool.

Sick man.

What rotors are those?

Any photos with wheels on?

birdmanx1 04-23-2011 09:06 PM

That looks fantastic Daisuke, curious to see how it'll look with the stock rims. I was planning on getting mine powdercoating the same color but was convinced to think twice about the extra effort to keep white calipers clean - seeing your set, I'll definitely get those done once I go with darker rim colors; that would make for a nice contrast. Cheers.

Thanks! Z1 2-piece rotors : )

I have stock wheels, but did not take a photo yet. I am going to wash the car tomorrow and will try to get pics in daylight.

i had some bad luck recently and this was the result :(

dont want to post the pic in your thread, but you're welcome to click and see what i mean. send me a PM please :)

Red__Zed 08-07-2011 12:23 AM

Hey mike, couple questions-

Can you color match to the z's red? And any chance of a faster turnaround if I drove out there?

Mike 08-07-2011 11:53 AM

I think my red is fairly close. If you bring them, I can do them in a day if we coat over the original paint (which can be done with no ill effects).

I prefer to strip them though, and thats an overnight process.

MightyBobo 08-07-2011 08:30 PM
