I'm hoping it's something minor. |
In for more info. I've seen you've had the kit installed at least a week from another thread. Curious of the older map, boost, etc.
And PS **** happens. I remember a WRX member that he or a shop or someone somehow left a nut in the manifold somehow and boom after a week or so. Found it during the tear down. It all gets worked out somehow but I know its rough. Sorry. |
Leakdown? Compression test? Symptoms? What exactly broke? Spun rod bearing? Cracked ringland? Melted piston crown? What happened?
If you are still mobile I'm guessing either a cracked ring land or bad bearing and rod knock, but otherwise its still running...? |
Not sure where to begin but here goes. This is my third boosted z for starters. My first was a 350z with the aps TT kit. Blew the stock motor on that and went with a built block, sold the car shortly after due to a bad divorce and the car is still running great. On my 370z I went with the gtm stage II TT kit and wanted to just stay with the stock block due to saving to buy another house. I installed the kit myself and took a lot of time doing the install so their were no mistakes. The car has ran great since the install with zero problems to speak of. To be honest the only thing I can think of is when I bought a boost controller I was having boost issues. The car was hitting 20psi of boost until I found the problem. Again no signs of any issues or noises. I drove the car to dallas and back for the clutch install and last weekend took a trip to the mountains with zero problems. At this point my guess is that when the car was overboosting is must have weakend one of the rods and when john from z1 was tuning it finally gave. I will post pictures but it looks like cylinder #5. To any of you guys about to go FI you better have some dough ready for when this kinda thing may happen. These engine are strong from the factory but are not made for boost. I do not blame Z1 for what happened and do not blame anyone. Its tough to watch your car blow a motor but the way I look at it there are a lot more things in this world to have to worry about like health issues in such. John from z1 is going to work me up a price for a short block and after everything is re-built I do plan on going back to z1 for another tune. My goal now is to shoot for 600whp since I have the stage II kit so I will need some advice from you guys who have actually tested those waters.
Thanks again for the help and kind words.. And spohn I still just don't know about you and john from z1 agrees your one odd cat. lol :) pics very soon!!! |

There's your problem right there. That sucks man. Good luck with the build. |
What do you mean? ;) why bring Jon in this. Jon would say that to my face. I am weird. I have wild views of all sorts. To those that know me that's no secert. I'm either extremely liked or disliked. It's hard to judge threw a forum of who we are. But I'm not going to put gravey on anything. I call it as is. For you to to say you found a mistake obviously points out you had the boost controller routed wrong. $hit happens.

This just teaches everyone that they should buy a very good boost controller. |

20 lbs of boost? Helluva ride! At least we know stage 2 turbos can push that!
I'm also interested in seeing what a built block with stage 2 turbos can do. |
Good luck with the rebuild! Keep us updated!
You can always buy this guy's long block and maybe beef it up with some new internals (ignore the thread title, there's actually an engine in there too LOL) : http://www.the370z.com/parts-sale-pr...sion-sale.html |
I also learned with the stock engine it has a threshold of power (550whp?) which the lower end can't withstand, yet the pistons will (Unlike Subaru's).
Keep your chin up. All boosted VHR engines are a liability, no matter how we wish. Coop |
The stage 2's will give you 20psi but they will be spinning WAY too fast while they are doing it lucky one didn't grenade
|
WOW. That's interesting. Any of you running gauges with alarm settings? I have my boost alarm set to 10 PSI since I around 9-9.5 PSI tops. My gauge is off by 2 PSI, so I'm going to adjust it again to be safe.
|
Waiting for john to get back with me on some prices/options. Iam also hoping the turbo's were not damaged if so Iam doing the 2867's. muahahahah!!!!
|
Mmmm. H-Beam rods, decent pistons, good head gasket and bolts. Hopefully the crank is and heads are ok. Buying a new short block sucks. I need to get one now at a deal. Should build this bitch now and stop being stupid. Won't have my next years budget for a month.

Looking for a long block or bottom end, crazy question but what is the 370z engine model number? VHR? Still delirious from yesterday... !@#$%^&*()

Yeah I saw that but I would rather just buy a built long block and have no worries...

It's no fun but like I said you guys about to go FI better have some money put back for a rainy day when and if it happens.... Iam thinking with the TT kit, clutch, built motor, tune, etc, etc, etc I think it would be safe to say right around 20k. Still a lot less than a gtr and most other cars that could compete with a boosted z apples to apples...
|
sorry to hear about this :(
i do have a short block for sale though if you're interested in building it, shoot me a PM |

BTW, what parts/work would be needed to have a built motor? |
I sent sam from gtm an email about a built long block since their web page says they have a few in stock but there's no telling when I may or may not hear anything back. Should have just bit the bullet and bought a gtr from the get go... !@#$%^&*()

Personally, I'd buy all the parts and take it to someone local to you that's good assuming you can handle pulling the motor yourself.
|
Since my engine loss I cant stop listening to this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgrE-g_rCi8 Gotta get another engine soon!!!!!! |
^ lol!!
|
MTI here in GA is great. Most shops send there work there.
|
Have never heard of them but I am hoping to hear something back from john at z1 and maybe even sam from gtm. Also need a cheery picker and engine stand. Man this is bringing back memories....
|
You would think some of these company's who make TT kits for our cars would have some built motors ready to go when someone pops a motor.... Hell what do I know..

The poeple who make the TT kits can't even get their TT kits out the door. |

Haha!! :bowrofl:

Like I said before, you guys that are about to take the plunge to go fi had better be paying attention because at this point I have no options for a built block and even when I do manage to get my hands on one it will still take a lot of time to install the turbo kit again and then install the motor... At this point Iam seriously considering buying another stock motor and selling the tt kit and then selling the car.
