Sad to hear. Was it under load when it failed? Temps? Oil pressure? Other signs?

I'm curious to see what's in the oil pan and condition of your spark plugs. I might want to change mine soon so I'm going to check it out as well. Still on canned tune, but it's a daily.

Ouch. Stupid question. Can this be done from the bottom without the need to drop the engine and pull the heads?

Replacing the rod bearings and mains...yes you should be able to. I have before atleast on the older VG30DE motors. PITA, but do able. You have to release some pressure from the main caps.

If the crank has to be removed, timing components have to be taken off. If pistons/rods have to be pulled, then the heads have to come off. Might as well just pull it to make life simple and easy.

You did build the engine to go along with your supercharger right?

It would have to be a pretty damn impressive built motor, since a stock shortblock and the install shouldn't be $10k.

Hope everything works out for you. The other thread about a used Vortech SC unit failing and now this.

Just curious, why did you take it back down to 8lbs? 490whp is impressive for 12lbs for the stillen kit. Do you know what your tuner set your target air fuel ratio at? and how aggressive was the timing?

Dantrag 09-09-2013 08:41 PM

Nah, not looking at 10k not going that rich. I'm hopeful to get out for 4500, realistically before its all said and done and I'm driving away should be no more than 6k and that's giving ~1k+ for incidentals.

And no, I don't know the exact tune specs. I do wonder though if if having an aggressive tune and then dropping the boost from 12 down to 8lbs wasn't somehow responsible.

Was qouted $8600 to pull motor and rebuild, bottom end with a stock short block a blew a hole in mine, :(. I always go over a bit becasue there would be always so odds and ends. IF it was $4500 I would still have the kit..An not sold it

Sorry for off topic. Ok yea. Replacement of short block and labor of pulling motor is half that cost. Sucks. I really like to learn to build my own.

You mean under $5k including parts and labor to pull the motor and rebuild/upgrade the short block?

So whats going on here ??? :)

luigi90210 09-17-2013 02:49 PM

im confused

what happened when the motor blew up?
did you retune when you lowered boost from 12psi to 8psi?

Dantrag 09-22-2013 08:00 AM

Ok so update:

Have GTM shipping forged rods, pistons, and head gasket. Forged crankshaft also otw. Some other misc. stuff also. Hopefully parts will be here by end of the week. Will post pics and new dyno map after the tune. Say a prayer for me, I miss my baby. I be fiendin' for my z!
