Two things will happen:
-The interior will come apart and rattle letting you know to replace it ASAP

AND
-If you do not replace it, it can clog the pipe and actually push air backwards into the block destroying your engine.

This is why you do not run HFC/RTP with boost as the heat destroys them, you open up yourself to major issues. Can you run them? Sure, they will work but be prepared for them to fail and need to replace them at some point.

Here's what I don't get: how is it that all of these factory turbocharged performance cars have cats that do not burn up? Is the issue that the aftermarket just does not have access to the higher quality / more resilient cats, or is it a price prohibition, or what?

Stock cats, Test pipes, 3" down pipes
Basically you want straight pipes which have no material that can break off from heat or pressure. Even stock cats will get torn up, I have broken some already with mine.

Hell no. Test pipes. Stock cats would likely fry faster than aftermarket. Even if they survived, that's a ton of backpressure to introduce into a system that relies on exhaust flow.

You learn something new every day. I still don't know why you would go through the effort of turboing the car and leave the stock cats unless you're in a state that requires it.

I have stock cats on mine but I'm SC ,and need emissions but I wouldn't put any cats on a turbo car they will get burned up faster than mine.

I was curious about this too. I ran HFCs on my old STi and never heard anyone having a failure or even being concerned about it. Either way, I'm going with test pipes but I'd still like to know why it's an issue on this platform.

The cats on the STI are a lot further down stream from the turbo than on the Z. Heat is the issue, and the additional distance makes a huge difference.

That was the only thing I could think of. I believe the FI 3" exhaust which is made for turbo applications even has HFCs in it but they're much farther down stream. I guess if someone is determined/required to run cats, that would be a good option. I may go that route later down the road if my inspections don't go as planned.
