GTM Performance Engineering: Mild 7 A/T Twin Turbo Build

We would like to share a really nice build we finished up not too long ago with a 7 speed automatic. This is a very well rounded build with a lot of nice touches and was completed here at our California facility. This transformation was an A to Z build done under one roof from installing the turbo to building the transmission and tuning all the way down to the alignment. The only thing that we did not do in house was the upholstery work. For the power, we installed and tuned our Garrett based Stage 2 Twin Turbo Kit along with our GTM 3” downpipes with external wastegates and our 3” cat-back exhaust. This is on the stock engine and 93 octane fuel.

To cope with the torque produced by the engine, the 7 speed automatic was fortified with our Stage 4 transmission build with our proprietary internal components. Here is the description of our Stage 4 transmission from our website:

GTM is proud to offer the Ultimate Transmission upgrades For the Nissan/Infiniti JATCO JR710E 7 Speed Automatic transmission. Our Main focus from the beginning was to offer a complete true solution through out the whole assembly and not only to certain gears. The stage 4 transmission upgrade will add significant improvement to all seven gears of all the transmission parts that listed here .
• GTM Friction Discs
• GTM Separator Plates
• GTM Clutch Module Assemblies
• GTM Torque Converter Friction Discs
• GTM Torque Convertor
• GTM Apply pistons
• GTM Metal surface treatment
• GTM Valve Body
These upgrades results in the improvement listed below:
• Increase Heat capacity resistance by upgrading OE friction material from OEM D-0530-31 to GTM D-0880-88. (35% Over Stock)
• Increase Clutch Friction Plate Surface Area By increasing amount of clutches used (from 32 clutches to 44)
• Increase Torque holding capacities by 40% By using different friction materials and adding more clutch plates
• GTM Separator Plates are used specially-made from high-quality steel to ensure durability, and are done in several processes to control surface finish to meet friction requirements
• GTM Stepped pressure plate
• All Separator and Pressure Plates are Surface treated to increase durability and reduce frictions
• GTM Lube Modification
• GTM Apply Pistons
• GTM shift point and speed modification

In addition to our Twin Turbo Kit and Transmission, this build includes our GTM 70mm Competition Radiator with internal heat exchanger for the transmission fluid and our fan shroud for the OEM fans. We also have our 25 row transmission cooler plumbed in series with our internal heat exchanger to ensure stable fluid temperatures. To keep engine temperatures in check, we also use our 25 row engine oil cooler with our thermostatic sandwich adapter.

With a wicked fast shifting transmission and more than enough torque on tap to overwhelm the rear tires, our GTM Plug and Play Traction Control System was implemented to ensure that the car wasn’t a mobile smoke machine in low gears.

Rounding out the build we installed KW Variant 3 Coilovers, SPC front and rear camber kits, and Hotchkis sway bars with our custom alignment performed on our laser alignment rack. To give the car a little more show to complement the go, the seats, door cards, center console and knee pads were reupholstered with red Alcantera while other trim pieces were finished in a carbon fiber style coating. The calipers were also done in red powder coat and carbon fiber exterior trim pieces were installed.

Overall, the customer was extremely pleased with the way the car turned out and amazed by the way it drove. In reaction to our Traction Control System, he commented that “this is the mod that every car I’ve ever had built was missing”. This, coming from a gentleman owning multiple, highly modified vehicles.

Here is the list of on the car:

• GTM Garrett based Stage 2 Twin Turbo Kit with GT2860RS turbos and .86A/R turbine housings
• GTM Stage 4 Automatic Transmission
• GTM 70mm Competition Radiator with internal heat exchanger and fan shroud for OEM fans
• GTM 3” Donwpipes with external wastegates
• GTM 3” Cat-Back exhaust
• GTM 25 Row Transmission Cooler
• GTM 25 Row Engine Oil Cooler
• GTM 3 gauge package with Defi Boost Gauge, Defi Transmission Fluid Temp Gauge, and Innovate Air/Fuel Ratio Gauge
• GTM Plug and Play Traction Control System
• Blitz SBC Spec R Electronic Boost Controller
• KW Variant 3 Coilovers
• SPC Front and Rear Camber Kits
• Hotchkis Front and Rear Sway Bars
• Interior Upholstery
• Interior Trim Coating
• Carbon Fiber Exterior Trim Pieces
• Red Powder Coated Akebono Calipers
• Project Mu Brake Pads
• Stoptech Two Piece Floating Rotors

Here are the dyno graphs of the car before and after. This was done on 11 PSI

Great results!
Sam, did you guys every do any data logging on a car before & after your radiator upgrade kit? Curious to see how yours performs.

tower74 03-15-2013 10:28 AM

Wow. Great numbers! ! That had to cost a ton for all those upgrades but I'm sure it is well worth it. Nice job.

It is mild in comparison to our upcoming V8 Twin Turbo powered 370Z or our Positive Displacement Supercharged V8 370Z. ;)

It will be an option available from GTM. ;)

We'll offer them in three different forms: Turbocharged, Positive Displacement Supercharged, and Naturally Aspirated with Individual Throttle Bodies.

KaienZ34 03-15-2013 03:20 PM

What type of V8, LSX??

G37sHKS 03-15-2013 03:20 PM

What engine its going to be?

SS_Firehawk 03-15-2013 03:34 PM

So full of win! I would kill to see a VK56VD...

elperuano 03-15-2013 04:05 PM

Thank god there's a page 2 now. iPhone was gettin overloaded!
Looks like some great work!

Mike@GTM 03-15-2013 04:13 PM

The engine option we're referring to is the VK56DE. We will be looking into the VK56VD engine swap as well.

Well now if we are talking about some V8 lovin' then I might just have to take back the part about me buying the 4.2L and seeing what one of these bad boys will run me.....turbo charged of course.

Sam, is the VDC turned on/off in the video?

The VDC was left on. Our Traction Control system reacts so much faster than the stock VDC, that the ECU doesn't have time to even think about closing the throttles down on you before traction is restored. You can leave the VDC on or off depending on how you want the car to drive. For example, you can setup our traction control to allow a little more sideways action before kicking in. In that case, you would want the VDC off so you can hang the tail out more. In cases where you want minimal wheel spin, you can leave the VDC on and have the traction control system maintain maximum grip for you.

Great. Is the racelogic traction control kit on your website car specific to the 370z? It looks like a plug and play item but wanted to make sure no "tuning" is required by GTM as I plan to get a TT kit and racelogic TC and have a local installer do the work.

Yes, it is a specific plug and play harness that is supplied with the traction control unit. Also, the head unit itself is setup by us so that you don't need to worry about setting up all the various trigger settings and I/O ports. That is why it is a true plug and play system: you don't need to fiddle with it and it works straight out of the box.

Sounds great. I have some mechanical knowledge, would I be able to install this myself or is a shop recommended? I read through the racelogic install manual and I am assuming we can plug directly into the ABS module without cutting and splicing wires?

Thanks

Our plug and play system is just that: no splicing required. It is so simple, we timed our technician and it literally took him 78 seconds to plug it all in and drive away. The only reason you would need a shop to install the system is if you want a super clean install of the head unit that you would be unable to do yourself. But for all practical purposes, getting the traction control installed and working only takes a minute or two to accomplish.

Also, every system gets installed in our test car, flashed, tuned, tested and dialed in before it ships. That way, there is nothing the end user has to do except install it and go.

Speaking of the Race Logic system...

elperuano 03-21-2013 04:03 PM

What's the difference between this and the factory vdc? I read it kicks on sooner? Is that it?

The difference in performance will blow your mind.

Basically the factory VDC is a nasty, intrusive POS that gets in the way of having fun and if you turn it off, then you could end up wrapping your car around a tree if you're not careful. The factory VDC closes the throttles and murders the power for a bit before giving it back to you. On corner exit, this stability control strategy is a total killjoy and really takes the fun out of the car.

The Racelogic, on the other hand, is barely perceptible when it is doing its thing. Basically, it interrupts the firing of a single fuel injector for a single cylinder so that it takes a gulp of fresh air instead of a fuel/air mixture to limit the power. It does this on a rotating schedule as needed so that each cylinder gets a fresh air charge in turn. As you can imagine, this happens extremely quickly. The traction control monitors the wheel speed every thousandth of a second and at the first hint of traction loss cuts just enough power to maintain traction so quickly that the factory ecu doesn't even realize you were about to lose the tail of the car. In fact, you probably won't notice either. All you'll feel is hard acceleration that maximizes the grip your tires and suspension can hold.

FYI, these are the 5 speed transmissions and are only applicable to the 2008 G37 and earlier 350z's. Also, our Stage 3 transmission comes with our upgraded torque converter so you don't need to purchase it separately like you do with the Level 10. ;)

As for the core charge, since the TCM is integrated into the valve body on all the later cars and is coded specifically to the car it is from, supplying a core is necessary to ensure that the transmission will actually work once you install it. If you don't want to supply us your transmission to build, then we have to get the correct valve body with the coded TCM specifically for the car it is going to be installed in.
