How many of you would be interested in changing your transmission to a 4L80e if I were to be able to make a whole kit? I'd have to tear apart my car for research which would most likely be done over the winter.

This is the kind of power a 4L80e can handle:

Very interested! I have a 7at with 423rwhp and 325tq and am planning to build the top and bottom this winter then come spring I'm removing the Stillen supercharger and going TT
Would love to beef up the tranny. Will definitely have to do something with what I'm planning

I think most guys with the valvebody/cooler are in the 350-400tq range more than that and you probably need the extra plates in the stage 4

So the consensus is that <400 is reasonably doable? out of the higher gears of course.

seems like it but thats the part that always turned me off.

why would i mod my car for more power and to be faster......but i cant get on it after 4th gear without spending another $7k? just not worth it in general.

Tempestz 08-01-2014 09:08 AM

Never topped out 4th in Hawaii…
But i know what you mean. If i were to ever get a lower rear gear, i.e. 3.69/3.90/4.08 4th would top out a lot sooner. The only thing I have out here is Autocross. I miss the NorCal Track days. :(

There's Level 10 Transmission in NJ that did fully built for me and SharpByCoop. It's way below $7K

Tempestz 08-02-2014 12:52 PM

Really? Care to enlighten me? Pm please. I'd love to know more about it. But being in Hawaii makes it that much more expensive.

My mistake.. I didn't realized this is only 7-speed but at least you have another option beside GTM for built transmission. I'm just helping out guys with auto.

but it doesn't help the 5's and 7's are completely different and cannot be interchanged, the internal parts are even different, the valve bodes have completely different solenoids and things nothing crosses over and level 10 has already been contacted about the 7 speed several times and they have said basically maybe some day they will have support for it. the 5 speed is the 4l80e to the 7speeds 6l90 if you want to put it in gm terms. the 5 speed is a half accumulator half pwm based transmission and the 7 speed is all pwm based. Hell the 5 speed still has drum bands in it where as the 7 speed went to perimeter clutch packs.

Basically ther is NO ONE but GTM that builds up 7 speed's

Ok first off it was stupid to do, but my tranny is stock and I'm running the gem supercharger kit and i maxed the speedo... The tranny was fine i checked it😃

based on the transmissions histroy don't make a habit of it, complicated machines are fun like that, it isn't a matter of "the trans is good for 350 so if you are making more than that it will fail" it is more of "the trans is good for 350 so if you are making that or less don't worry about it failing early as much" Once you start going over rated capacity no one can tell you what will happen, unless you go way over like if it is rated for 350 and you are trying to put 700 through it you will slip the clutches and melt it, if you don't something will break.

i guess with a supercharger you should be ok.

to be honest most of the supercharger kits barely make any big power on the Z. i've seen a few put up decent numbers but most are just ehhhh with the SC kits.

i guess 7AT and a SC would survive.

this is why i cant go boost lol TT kit only and 500whp min would be my target

Yes and no, I believe shumby was the first 7AT with the GTM stage 1 SC and he blew his tranny making the same power as me (400HP/340TQ). He would drive his car hard so it took a beating but honestly anything much over bolt ons for the auto is a ticking time bomb.

It could just be that first time you drive hard and shift 4-5 while still on the throttle and it pops, it really boils down to the extra TQ it seems. I have seen the TT guys with auto with more HP do ok but you have to watch out for the TQ and those upper gears.
