+1 for more information on what led to engine failure in the first place. Just goes to show you that the couple hundred bucks for a tune is well worth it.

A lean AFR wouldn't cause that much damage. At worse, it would melt a few things. If the engine was pinging, it would have pulled timing until the pinging stopped. Unless he threw some 87 octane in there and went for a very very spirited run, but even then I don't think "that" much damage would be done.
I'm generally very very curious to hear what happened exactly. |

From the pic of the back of the crank it looks like some bolts came out and the others sheared off, probably under a load at high RPM's causing the engine to instantly overspeed and blow before the rev limiter could catch it.
