Default question for those that have FI

I have had my TT kit installed in my car for about two months now. Everything works great and I love driving it. Though there is something that I am wondering about. When I am driving and I max out each gear 1st, 2nd and then to 3 my car will not let me shift into 6th. Before I had the TT installed and I was going from the street to an on ramp I would down shift to 2nd then max out 2nd and shift into 3rd for a short time and go right to 6th. Now when I try to do the same thing the car doesn’t let me shift into 6th. Is this supposed to happen? Is it like some kind safety feature with rev match? I really don’t have any idea why this is happening. So any feedback would be great.

Try shifting from third to 6th with only moderate power. I never shift from third to 6th so I have never experienced the problem. If I am maxed in third I am usually letting off the gas on my next shift anyway because I am looking at north of 100mph at that point.

Does it feel like a lock out or does the transmission grind when trying to go into 6th gear?

@ kirkster: I don't fully max at 3rd cause as you said I would be doing 100+ and I shift into 6th at about 70. It only happens when I max out second and then go into 3rd for a bit then 6th. If I'm just driving like a normal person and shift though all gears shifting around 3000 rpms their is no problem.

@ thedreamer: it feels like a lock out. Much like is your going 45 and try to down shift into 1st. The gear does go a little bit into 6th but not fully. If I place it into 6th just after going from 3rd it makes a grinding noise that I'm sure its due to not fully being in gear.

Nothing is wrong really, I was just wondering if anyone has had this happen to them. It's just strange to me that I could do it before the TT and now I can't. Also if I wait from my rpms to drop back down I can then shift into 6th no problem.

I don't see anything wrong with going from 3rd->6th. So what you rev to about 5k getting onto a highway. And shifting through the other gears would be silly.

I do get locked out of 6th till the rpms get to around 3ish I think (cars been in storage for awhile now). 70mph ~ 2600RPM

Each gear has a speed it works best in. Higher gears such as 6th is able to work from 33 mph and up. I go from 3rd to 6th because there is no need to hit 4th and 5th. I'm already at the speed 6th can handle. Hitting the other gears would be a waste of time. If I was racing and wanted max acceleration I would hit every gear topping out each one. But I'm sure you know that. Just answering your question.

try turning SRM off and see if it changes it at all, might be a safety thing for the gearbox/SRM to do with power/torque levels since you've had the TT kit installed.

Not sure I would go from 3rd to 6th, but SRM could be finicky at times. You may get better results with it off.

I skip gears all the time, if you do it too fast there is a "lock out" because it is still dropping revs. I usually run a 1-2-4-6 for getting on and highway driving. On the streets i cant really make it viable to get out of 4th around me... with every light there is. In the canyon i will usually run full gearing 1-6, usually stick in 4-5 and dont experience it.

I'm N/A and i have the same issue it is due to the gear rpm difference.

***I replied so you knew it wasnt an FI issue***

the problem is the clutch master cylinder. you do not notice it much before going to FI but once I did you could not shift into 6th like you are saying. I also changed out my clutch and flywheel as well when going to FI. these cylinders go out quite frequently on the Z and depending on your nissan dealership and if you are still under warranty they should replace it at no charge.

Skipping gears is hell on your synchros. It worked before because they were fresh, it doesnt work now because you are wearing them out. Pretty soon you will have trouble shifting into 6th at all without double clutching. Many dealers will reject warrenty replacement of transmission with synchros problems if they find you skip shift gears... they would know because someone might complain that they are no longer able to do so, or they will ask you to take them on a drive to show them the problem, but they are also observing how you drive.

If you are hell-bent on continuing to skip shift 3rd to 6th, instead of depending on whats probably a single brass synchro for 6th to slow the mainshaft down by so much for such a change in ratios, just double clutch it and you are removing most the burden of the synchros. double clutching takes more time but if your skipping 3-6 then you arent racing anyway.

ALSO i would like to add that I am not a transmission builder, so my terminology shouldnt be quoted or used for debate and i will gladly take a seat on this topic to a transmission expert... i am just explaining it the best that I can based on the little i know about one aspect of cars/performance that i have rather avoided learning the deep inner-workings of.

Personally I have never had issues skip shifting, 5th is a very seldom used gear for me with 6 speeds. Over the many years driving 6speeds I never had any synchro issues. But I never try to slam it into 6th I let the engine rmps get to approximately the same for 6th because I never in a hurry because 6th is just for cruising in the hwy. Along as you aren't trying to engage 6th from doing 70 in 3rd I don't see an issue.
