Say the range considered normal is 1-3PSI(made up numbers). If that's the range the ECU is supposed to see to consider everything working properly and the numbers are outside of that prescribed range the computer will set said fault. If that fault is turned off the sensor still reads, it just no longer throws a fault if it's outside of that prescribed range.
