I'm trying to understand that manifold piping going to the hot-side of the turbo. It looks as if it has to make a 270 degree turn at one point, right

I'm trying to understand that manifold piping going to the hot-side of the turbo. It looks as if it has to make a 270 degree turn at one point, right into oncoming air from the other side of the engine. Maybe I am not seeing it right, but that seems terribly inefficient.

Right, but see how your pipes come together such that both exhaust flows are pointed in the same direction? It appears to me that in the picture of the Jtran setup that the exhaust flows are actually opposing each other at a sharp bend before heading towards the turbine.
