going turbo soon and had a few questions.

I have spent a lot of time on here reading all I can find on going turbo and I have learned a lot but I still have a few questionable that I hope you all can help me with.

First the TT kit I'm getting comes with BOV's and I live in CA. I was wondering if other people in CA have them and what trouble have you had with the cops? I know they are illegal and I did read a forum on here about it, but I just want to know if some people who have it in CA have problems with having them?

Second I am going with JWT clutch and flywheel and I also know that I need a new csc. What I'm wondering is how much HP can the JWT handle as I can't find out how much it can hold. Will my TT be ok with this new clutch or should I get a higher stage? I only plan on getting about 470ish rwhp.

Third I have a Berk exhaust, will I need to upgrade it to a bigger exhaust when I get the turbo or will I be ok with it?

Sorry if these questions have been asked before. I tried my best to look up everything before I asked these. Thanks for any help that you all can give me.

LafitteZ 08-30-2011 09:16 PM

in my opinion you should be good with that clutch and flywheel with that horse power number. you can use that exaust but if you want more power get the bigger piping. you can do a twin turbo kit on a bone stock z but most people get the supporting mods to get everything out of it. GET A OIL COOLER FOR SURE.

Jamaica 08-30-2011 09:23 PM

If you drive regular you should be ok. Oil cooler yes. Supporting mods is a must with TT and with any Forced induction

weiboy718 08-30-2011 10:31 PM

i personally had the JWT clutch and to me it felt really similar to my stock clutch. i have since swapped it out for Southbend TRZ clutch and and it is much much better.

you can get into big trouble if caught with the TT or S/C in CA. i wouldn't worry too much about getting caught just as long as you don't street race or do stupid sh!t in the public. when attending to meets publicly don't pop your hood too often, that usually prompts cops to look under yours first. you can keep your rpm's low and the BOV's won't make too much noise when you see a cop. also you can get your intercooler black coated for a stealthy look. cops and chp knows what they're looking for and a big intercooler is a good give away that you're modded.

G/L!

Blackcrimzon 08-30-2011 11:32 PM

@weiboy718 thanks for the info. I was kind of hoping that if I don't do anything stupid I will be ok. I don't street race so I will be ok there. I hadn't thought about the fact that if I go to a meet that cops can bust me there so thanks for that. I will be careful. Also getting my intercooler colored is a great idea! Be like a ninja intercooler :). What stage clutch is that Southbend TRZ clutch, is it a stage 2?

@lafittez, Jamaica@UAMotorsports. Thank you also for the info. Is a new oilcooler really needed? I read on here that as long as your temp doesnt go over 220 i should be fine. Or do I really need one? And I do have a few mods but not for turbo. I have stillen headers, berk HFC and a Berk Exhaust. I want to get the most power out of my turbo so may be i will be going with the HKS hi power exhaust. Any thoughts on this exhaust for a TT?

Thank you guys so fare for all your imput.

I don't think you can keep the temp at 220 without an oil cooler.
HKS will work well but I think GTM are the only ones with 3", I would probably go with that but the TT guys should give you more info

roplusbee 08-31-2011 02:03 AM

Greddy is 2.75", but 2.5" is good for stage 1 TT. Of course you can squeeze more out, but would be pointless if you are going to the NINJA look.

Not really going NINJA over all. Just want to keep the fact that I have a TT in CA a little bit less noticeable. About how much more power would I get out of having a pipe an extra .5 inchs? I mean I already am spending a lot on the TT and I already bought a new exhaust. I would hate to spend more on another exhaust for like may be 10 hp. Or are we talking like 40 or something? I was also wondering had anyone ever heard or seen the GTM dual quad exhaust? GTM Motorsports*::*EXHAUST*::*GTM SPEC 3" 370Z CAT-BACK QUAD TI TIPS

roplusbee 08-31-2011 06:55 AM

For Stage 1, you should get 450 out of it w/ the 2.5" exhaust. With spot on tuning you could probably squeeze more out, but it all depends on which kit and tuner you go with. I am assuming you are looking at GTM?

Dembflyr 08-31-2011 07:44 AM

I have the Berk with the GTM stage I TT. I don't know how much of a difference a 3" would make cause I've only had the 2.5. What I can say is that the car rips at 8psi. My boost was up around 11psi at first and I was slipping the stock clutch so there is plenty of power with the Berk exhaust.

And I will second what others have said about the oil cooler. Go with the 34 row with the thermostatic plate. My oil temps never go above 220 and on a cool day are right around 190-200.

weiboy718 08-31-2011 07:49 AM

Which part of Cali are you from?

Here's the clutch I'm referring to

Nixlimited 08-31-2011 12:53 PM

I think the BOV thing is not that big a concern unless you are acting a fool. I drove my STI with a big rotated turbo and a VTA BOV for years here with no trouble. And believe me, there was no mistaking it--the turbo sounded like a 747 throttling up and the BOV could be heard for blocks since I ran 28 PSI on the street. With that said, if I was ever in proximity of a cop, I short-shifted every gear and did my best to stay out of boost.

B.A.Q 08-31-2011 01:02 PM

Is there a fine for that in Cali or do they like tow the car or something?

SharpByCoop 08-31-2011 09:17 PM

I have dual BOV's and specified to have Sam at GTM use the Synchronic versions which have the option to recirculate back into the pre-intake with 1.25" hoses. Sam made this modification and the sound is negligible.

I also have the waste gates plumbed back into the exhaust. The whole car is stealth in this regard. My sig shows it's still effective. :)

That's what I recommend.

You can get more than 450whp with a 2.5'' exhaust. Lou got 480 something and I am sure you can take it up to 500..

Coop what exhaust do you have?

I have the GTM 2.5". Remember, (2) x 2.5" = 5" exhaust. That's a LOT of area.

I am such a stickler for quiet, though, I am removing my GTM system and installing the ARK Grip system. The GTM system performs wonderfully, but my wife wants it even quieter.

That's a consideration in MY household. :bowrofl:

Surely you are joking.

Ron 09-02-2011 08:34 AM

lol. Yeah coop. Dual 2.5" has an area of 4.91'' per pipe for a total of 9.82".
A 5" exhaust would have an area of 19.63".. so yeah 2x2.5" is not equal to 5'' in this case.

Following blindly, 2x2.5 has about the area of a 3.5 inch pipe. Of course, it's not just about area, but we will save that for another lecture.

Ron 09-02-2011 09:14 AM

Agreed. Point is, for OPs desired power level, 2.5 is more than enough. I would use the money on something else.

+1. A 2.5" exhaust will be fine. The HKS exhaust is actually smaller at 2.36".

Thank you. Open mouth, insert foot. :icon14:

I will definitely be getting an oil cooler now. I guess the parts that I read where a little wrong. So thanks for this info. I am also glad to hear that you have a berk exhaust with a TT and glad to hear that you like the power that you got with it. Out of all the exhaust I enjoy the Berk sound the best. So this news makes me happy :)

I am from south Cali, I live in the San Diego area. And thanks for looking up that clutch for me. I want to get a really good clutch but not to expensive. But when you go FI cheap really isnt a word used I have come to find out.

Thanks Nixlimited, this is the kind of thing I was hoping to hear from people about. I was hoping that even if I did have BOV that as a long as I didn't act a fool as you said, I should be fine.

I am going out to sea for a month in a few weeks and when I do I am dropping off my car to have my TT installed. Ill keep you guy up dated with the results when its done. Thanks for all the feed back so fare :happydance:
